Is malwarebytes a complete antivirus?

Recommended Posts

Greetings to all! Please answer such questions!

1) Is Malwarebites a full-fledged antivirus like Kaspersky, ESET NOD32 and similar? Or is he a support program like Zemana, Hitman Pro or Trojan Hunter? It can be installed on your computer with the only antivirus option?

2) If it is a full-fledged antivirus, then which version of the antivirus engine does it use? If it uses a licensed engine, which company?

a) Own engine

b) Licensed engine

c) Licensed engine & Own

Thanks!

Hello and Welcome @Imedion124

Malwarebytes is NOT a full fledged antivirus. The link below should explain it better, although it is talking about MB3 it pretty much applies for MB4 as well.

Malwarebytes using its own engine for detection malware.

Thanks for link, Firefox! Then more questions arise.

1) As said by Malwarebytes - "What we did say and are continuing to say is that it can replace your antivirus software because our protection mechanisms (such as Malicious Website Blocking, Anti-Exploit and Anti-Ransomware) are more proficient at blocking/preventing infection when using the web than a traditional antivirus which relies mostly on signatures to attempt to detect and stop threats", in fact, by this definition, Malwarebytes is already a variant of Next-Gen AV vendors, like SentinelOne, CrowdStrike, Cylance and others. Am i thinking right?

2) There is a problem - since the main emphasis is on various detection techniques (non-signature), but Malwarebytes is also not clean HIPS, since there are signatures - 2 means of protection will work - the main of AV and Malwarebytes and this can be inconvenient

So the question remains:

Malwarebytes - Next-Gen Antivirus or powerful addition to a weak antivirus, for example, Defender, with an emphasis on non-signature protection?

I would say it is BOTH. MB detects on execution Defender will detect even if you open a folder with a malicious file in its database.  Defender also has a "cloud" component as well.

@koche

I believe the original poster was asking about having only just Malwarebytes Premium.

IF your machine has Kaspersky, Kaspersky will want to be "the" resident antivirus.

The Kaspersky version 20.0.14.1085   e   leads to several conflicts.

Customers who went back to earlier versions have done well.

MB does have signatures as well. But detects on scan or execution.

This is correct.  Malwarebytes avoids conflicts with antivirus by detecting only on execution (when malware attempts to execute in memory), not on-access (i.e. when the file is downloaded/created on disk) as AVs do (including Defender).  This means that if Defender or any other AV would detect a file with its signatures, it will detect and remove the threat before the Malware Protection in Malwarebytes ever sees it, thus preventing any conflict or 'fighting over the same file' from occurring.  In fact, Malwarebytes' QA team is constantly testing compatibility with other AV and security applications to verify that there are no compatibility issues and we also have a large community here on the forums who use a wide array of systems and security software configurations, many of whom are using various AVs alongside Malwarebytes, so when an incompatibility occurs it is usually discovered pretty quickly (for example, this recent issue with Kaspersky was discovered within hours of their initial release of the new build that created the incompatibility and Malwarebytes Developers are already working with Kaspersky Labs to resolve the issue).
