v4 GUI problem - can't add exclusions

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to add a few folders to Malwarebyte's exclusions (falsely detecting it as malware and stopping me from using it, I trust the application in question)...and I cannot figure out how. I've spent the past 10 minutes searching through the settings trying to find where to add files/folders to exclusions and I just cannot.

OK, I found it in History. Why isn't there a link to the allow list anywhere in settings? Having to access it through detection history isn't very intuitive.

First of all, thank you for the feedback and I regret the confusing experience you had. I hope this will help clarify why we changed the location for exclusion rules (Allow List).

  • Dashboard cards (Detection History, Scanner, Real-Time Protection): provide quick access to functionality that's most commonly used by all users.
  • Settings: provides access to options that only more advanced users are likely to configure.

I agree with this philosophy but.......

The settings does not seem to have the exclusions any more.  Exclusions is an "advanced" feature in this respect and the need to go into "Detection History" is totally counter intuitive. I have not had a detection in my history so why would I want to go there to add an exclusion for a folder I want to always exclude when I setup the program. Fair enough if one has had a detection and then wants to select it and exclude it in the future but makes no sense for the people who want to set up mutual exclusions for example (with their AV) prior to enabling MBAM.  Lets face it - most people who choose to use an antivirus alongside MBAM will need to do this and the last place thay will think to look is under "Detection History".

I believe the logic is for a couple of reasons.  First, the most typical scenario for a user creating an exclusion is for something that has been detected such as a PUP that they wish to keep installed on their system that Malwarebytes has flagged, a website that was blocked by Web Protection that they wish to visit, or in rare cases a false positive that they wish to exclude until it can be reported and corrected.  The scenario of preemptively excluding folders is definitely another common use case, however that's all the more reason not to 'hide' it with the other more advanced settings, at least in my opinion, and generally speaking, exclusions between AVs and Malwarebytes are not required for compatibility with only a handful of known exceptions, at least as far as I am aware based on reports here on the forums, but even then, that just further makes the case to have the option more up front accessible from one of the main buttons on the dashboard if it is a common action, at least in my opinion.  The settings are typically items that most users aren't expected to adjust at all; the things that are expected to be left at their defaults, at least that's how I think of it and in my opinion the new layout makes a lot more sense in that context, though obviously it's going to throw off anyone used to the old UI, but that's true of any changes made in the new one.
