Malwarebytes shuts down

Hello,

I'm running windows XP, AV is AVG and I run a regular daily scan. I have both Internet Explorer and Firefox loaded.

This afternoon I tried a search on Google using IE. Each link I clicked on was hijacked to an ad.

1. I tried to run Malwarebytes but it shut down just as the scan began. I tried to start it again, but a window popped up saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."

2. I tried to run a scan on AVG, but after a bit got the blue screen saying that windows had shut down.

I restarted the computer and ran a google search using firefox for this problem. Firefox works fine (and still does). I found this forum. Per the initial instructions I reinstalled Malwarebytes Anti-malware, updated and started the quick scan. The program shut down. Then I downloaded Hijack This and tried to run. It too shut down.

What should I do next?

Scott

Hello and welcome to the Malwarebytes forum!

Download and run RootRepeal CR

Please download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.

  • Click the reportTab.png tab at the bottom.
  • Now press the btnScan.png button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside All Seven options/scan area
    RR_checkbox.jpg
  • Now click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button. saveReport.png
  • Save it as RepealScan and save it to your desktop
