[ RESOLVED ] Leftover pop-up messages after removing Malwarebytes

Recommended Posts

I tried Malwarebytes Free but removed it after it kept popping up messages to buy the license, that ran on top of all other content and required a restart to remove each time. I used the standard removal tool in windows 10, but had leftover messages. I then used the Malwarebytes removal tool and thought I had finished, but every week on a Tuesday I get the following popup: It has a green circle with the letter "i" in it, and says, "We need to close your browsers. They cannot be open while we get rid of unwanted cookies and trackers" then lists Microsoft Edge (which by the way is never open as I do not use it). Clicking on the message does nothing. Left click, right click, nothing.

I tried the Malwarebytes removal tool again and it said there were no Malwarebytes files on my computer.  This is the same color as all the former Malwarebytes pop-ups trying to get me to buy the license. I have to restart my computer to get rid of the pop up until the next Tuesday. This pop-up never showed up before I installed Malwarebytes Free. I have searched my hard drives for any Malwarebytes files and have come up empty. This pop-up is on top of all other content and is very annoying. How can I remove it permanently? Screen shot of the pop-up attached.

What Porthos says above is correct.  If you have installed any other malware scanners or cleaning tools then that is likely the source of the issue.  It is also possible that you were scammed into installing a program that claimed to be the real Malwarebytes but was actually malware.

I would suggest installing and scanning with the legitimate version of Malwarebytes which can be found here and having it remove any threats it detects, restarting your system if prompted to do so to complete the threat removal process.  Additionally, if the issue still persists then I would recommend scanning with ADWCleaner and likewise having it remove anything it detects, again restarting your system if prompted to do so to complete the cleanup process.

If the problem still continues with the browser notifications then please read and follow the instructions in this topic and then create a new topic in the malware removal area by clicking here and one of our malware removal specialists will assist you in checking and clearing your system of any remaining threats.

I hope this helps, and if there is anything else we might assist you with please let us know.

Thanks

I'll try your suggestions. I got the free Malwarebytes right off the company's website, though so I doubt it was infected or fake. Malwarebytes is the only malware/adware/etc software I have added in the last several months and the notice first showed up after the first cleaning Malwarebytes Free performed. Thanks. If it does not work (I won't know until next Tuesday), I'll let you know.

OK, then it is likely that whatever is causing those notifications in your browser is due to some plugin or extension that got installed or some other tool (like if you have any sort of temp file cleaner/junk cleaner/privacy tool etc.).

We look forward to hearing back from you, and no worries, we'll definitely help you get your system cleaned up and in proper working order again.

This is not related to our program in any way. We can assist you in checking your computer for any type of possible infection though if you like.

The provided screenshot comes from something else on your system. If the ideas, directions from @exile360 don't correct your concerns please let us know.

Thank you

Ron

Apparently the suggestions worked. The pop-up did not appear today. Thank you all.
