Current version of MWB and Catalina?

Recommended Posts

Hello @MAXBAR1:

I remember you posting that you were testing Catalina 10.15 and I also remember @treed posting that Malwarebytes for Mac would not install on a Catalina powered system.  We also know that Malwarebytes for Mac 3.9.27 is not a public beta but is a release edition.  Malwarebytes developers writing code for a moving target like today's Catalina Developer Beta 7 must be a daunting task...

In truth I only tested the first public beta for about ten days then I gave up

In truth @treed published that news at the time of Catalina's first public beta on June 28th. The times have changed and we are less than ten days before the presentation and about twenty days from the release and that's why I asked the question because in the last years a compatible version was released around the end of August.

I wouldn't want to be in their shoes. Mine was a simple question.

It is Malwarebytes' official policy to never support any beta/pre-release operating systems just due to the fact that the OS code is not final and could be changed at any time rendering any modifications to Malwarebytes' software to make it compatible with the OS potentially moot so they wait until they get the final RTM of any OS before officially offering support for it in their software.

Of course you can always try installing it on a beta/pre-release OS, however just be aware that you do so at your own risk (as with all beta testing).

As I specified above, I have no intention or test of Catalina's beta right now (I wanted to do it all summer long, at my own risk and danger), nor to install MWB on it. Mine was a simple question to program the Catalina installation, once released to the public, choosing between:

- just released as MWB is already compatible
- wait, since MWB is not yet compatible I would not have a secure system.

I hope my position is clear now

As I wrote above to 1PW in recent years a version compatible with the new macOS was released around the end of August.

Since there is no way for the Developers to have the final bits for Catalina, I wouldn't expect a fully supported/compatible version of Malwarebytes to be released until at least a little while after Catalina goes RTM.  Obviously only the Devs/Product team know for sure, but that would be my guess based on past experience when dealing with non-final operating systems.  Of course if there aren't any major changes in Catalina that impact Malwarebytes compatibility then it could be a different story and the existing build of Malwarebytes may work flawlessly, however I suspect that will not be the case given that Apple are likely to make changes under the hood and with regards to security (to make things more secure/patch vulnerabilities etc.) that will probably impact how security/anti-malware applications need to install and run on the new OS.  So I guess it really all comes down to what has changed on Apple's end and how much effort is required on the part of Malwarebytes' Developers to adapt to those changes and without intimate knowledge of what those changes might be and how they might impact Malwarebytes, I really can't say one way or the other.

We're still evaluating changes against the latest beta, but it doesn't look like there are any huge issues with Catalina at this point. There are some things that will cause some unpleasant user experience with a couple specific things, which we're going to release a fix for (though obviously I can't give a specific date).

For machines that already have Malwarebytes installed, and that upgrade to Catalina, there should be no issues. The only thing you might want to do in such a case is to make sure to give RTProtectionDaemon "Full Disk Access" in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy. It will still work without that, but won't be able to scan Downloads or the desktop. (The latter is included because a lot of people change their browser downloads folder to the desktop.)

@treed I'm not interested in the release date of the correction because I'm more interested in the quality of the correction.
But I'd like to know what you mean by unpleasant user experience.

Since Apple will release an operating system only 64 bits, I would like to do a clean installation taking advantage of this to clean up my Mac. Unfortunately the current version does not install with Catalina starting from 0. Will a new version of MWB be published before the release of macOS? Thank you

Good day

Massimiliano

Getting closer to final release of Catalina so this is a good question.  Will there be a MB update before or after Catalina.
