Gritt Posted August 31, 2019 ID:1332328 Share Posted August 31, 2019 I received the following email this morning. Malwarebytes is and has been running in the background and I did a scan this morning no threats showed up. What should I do if anything? (FYI I don't use a camera or microphone.) I can send the email if you like. Thanks Hello! I am a hacker who has access to your operating system. I also have full access to your account. I've been watching you for a few months now. The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited. If you are not familiar with this, I will explain. Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device. This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it. Maurice Naggar Posted August 31, 2019 ID:1332330 Share Posted August 31, 2019 Hello Gritt. Delete the scam attempt email. These are fabricated / made up & mass emailed out. There is no truth in their claims. You can certainly do scans with Malwarebytes and with your antivirus just to check up. But, dont take the claims as being based in any "actual , factual reality". You may want to change all of your passwords to strong passwords. https://www.howtogeek.com/195430/how-to-create-a-strong-password-and-remember-it/ https://www.lastpass.com/password-generator Let me know if you need other help. Sincerely, Maurice

Maurice Naggar Posted August 31, 2019 ID:1332339 Share Posted August 31, 2019 You are welcome. The fact is that email spammers can manufacture emails on their own and without anything to do with your machine. If you ever left your email address out on a public venue – that is one way for your address to have been lifted. More likely, it may have been from any one of many data breaches See https://blog.malwarebytes.com/cybercrime/2018/12/data-scraping-treasure/ If needed, you could look into using something like Mailwasher. Mailwasher is owned by Firetrust. They have some free & some paid products. The main website is this http://www.mailwasher.net They also indicate they have a free spam blockerhttp://www.mailwasher.net/free-spam-blocker Sincerely,
