How stop MB from running?

Recommended Posts

Running free ver 3.7.1 and it says it's fully updated.System is Windows 10 64b.  Every morning I find MB is running in my systray & pops up a small window. I look in Task Manager and it's running. I stop it and see it is not set to load at startup. I check MB settings and can turn everything off.

The next morning same thing. How do I turn off MB so it only runs when I need to scan a file, w/is once in a blue moon? Made a number of searches and I must not be using the right terms b/c I can't believe other's also don't find this annoying.

Thank you.

From your post I assume you are only scanning occasionally and not running the real time protection.
Even when you close the GUI the little icon remains in the system tray because it leaves a background task still running.

Try right clicking the icon in the system tray and selecting 'Quit Malwarebytes' from the menu that pops-up.
(Note on some systems you have to left click not right click, it seems to be machine specific).

That should remove the icon, stop the background process, and prevent it from reappearing/relaunching at computer startup.

One thing to note is that you will have to do this after every manual scan that you run, I find it easiest just to 'Quit Malwarebytes' from the tray after I have completed a scan.

Just to add, I would also suggest updating to the latest version, 3.8.3 by opening Malwarebytes and navigating to Settings>Application and clicking on the Install Application Updates button and allowing it to install the new version or by downloading and installing it directly from here.

Once that is done, make sure that you verify that it is still set not to run when Windows starts just to make sure it has retained your preferred option.  Just as with 3.7.1 you can completely terminate the program at any time by right-clicking the tray and selecting Quit Malwarebytes and clicking Yes if prompted by User Account Control.
