Can't install Malwarebytes or run mbar

Recommended Posts

When trying to install Malwarebytes or run mbar (Malwarebytes Anti-rootkit), I get an error: "This app has been blocked for your protection. An administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more information, contact the administrator" I'm the only account/admin. I have no anti-virus or anti-malware other than windows defender.

Greetings,

It definitely sounds like your system may be infected, but we should be able to help you.  First, please try running the special build of Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit found in this topic, and if it works, have it scan your system and allow it to remove anything it detects and restart your system if prompted to do so to complete the removal process.

Once that is done, if the problems with other applications still persist, please try running ADWCleaner and likewise scan with it if it runs and have it remove everything it detects then restart your system if prompted to do so.

If you were successful with those, try running Malwarebytes 3 again and if it works, click on Scan Now to have it update and scan your system for threats.  Once the scan completes have it remove all detections and reboot if prompted to do so.

After that, if there are any remaining issues or if neither of those tools would run then please read and follow the instructions in this topic and create a new thread in the malware removal area by clicking here and one of our malware removal specialists will assist you in checking the system and cleaning any remaining threats.

It's probably the result of what the malware did to the system to prevent security apps from running.  Please follow my instructions above to post in the malware removal area and they'll get it fixed up for you.  It's most likely an issue with security certificates or some other mechanism in Windows being altered by the malware to block security applications but they'll be able to track it down.

Hi,  @ChildishGiant

My name is Maurice. I will be helping and guiding you, going forward on this case.   Thanks for relaying the support tool report file.

This Thread/topic is for ChildishGiant  only. who is the topic starter.

There is an infection here which stops all security softwares.  Please run the following.   This is the first step.  There will be more later.

Please read all of these lines first so that it is all clear to you about our plan. I need a one time run of MBAR like listed here, please.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit (MBAR) from this link here
click the blue Download button    ( ignore the text showing on the page )
and save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick on the MBAR file and allow it to run.

•Click OK on the next screen, to allow the package to extract the contents of the file to its own folder named mbar.

•mbar.exe will launch automatically. On some systems, this may take a few extra seconds. Please be patient and wait for the program to open.

•After reading the Introduction, click 'Next' if you agree.

•On the Update Database screen, click on the 'Update' button.

•Once you see 'Success: Database was successfully updated' click on 'Next', then click the Scan button.

With some infections, you may see two messages boxes:

1.'Could not load protection driver'. Click 'OK'.
2.'Could not load DDA driver'. Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart. Allow the computer to restart. Continue with the rest of these instructions.

•If malware is found, press the Cleanup button when the scan completes. .

Please attach the log it produces, you'll find the log in that mbar folder as MBAR-log-<date and time>***.txt . Please attach that to your next reply.

We will do more later.

Sincerely,

Maurice

Hi. Sorry for the lack of replies, I've written 2 and sent them but clearly they haven't gone through.I ran MBAR but many other antivirus/antimalware software was still being blocked from installing. I tried the listed solution but it didn't resolve the issue so I did a fresh install of windows and haven't had any related issues since. I did attempt to send the logs after running MBAR but like I said before, they must have not gone through.

Hi.

So given you have done a "fresh install" of Windows, the operating system should be doing normally, without any issue.

Best  practices & malware prevention:
Follow best practices when browsing the Internet, especially on opening links coming from untrusted sources.
First rule of internet safety: slow down & think before you "click".

Never click links without first hovering your mouse over the link and seeing if it is going to an odd address ( one that does not fit or is odd looking or has typos).

Free games & free programs are like "candy". We do not accept them from "strangers".

Never open attachments that come with unexpected ( out of the blue ) email no matter how enticing.
Never open attachments from the email itself. Do not double click in the email. Always Save first and then scan with antivirus program.

Pay close attention when installing 3rd-party programs. It is important that you pay attention to the license agreements and installation screens when installing anything off of the Internet. If an installation screen offers you Custom or Advanced installation options, it is a good idea to select these as they will typically disclose what other 3rd party software will also be installed.
Take great care in every stage of the process and every offer screen, and make sure you know what it is you're agreeing to before you click "Next".

Use a Standard user account rather than an administrator-rights account when "surfing" the web.
See more info on Corrine's SecurityGarden Blog http://securitygarden.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_7.html
Dont remove your current login. Just use the new Standard-user-level one for everyday use while on the internet.

Do a Windows Update.

Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled.

Keep your system and programs up to date. Several programs release security updates on a regular basis to patch vulnerabilities. Keeping your software patched up prevents attackers from being able to exploit them to drop malware.

I am glad to have worked with you.   All best wishes.
