Malwarebytes not helping?

Recommended Posts

OK so I'm new here and I'm not sure if this is in the right forum or not so I apologize beforehand if it's not. Anyways this is quite a long story so I'll try to keep it as short as possible without leaving out the important details.

Basically a couple weeks ago or so, I got hit with the Windows Police Pro virus. I eventually logged into safe mode, ran Spybot (didn't have Malwarebytes at the time) and it seemingly got rid of 29 entries of the fraud malware program. I then did a system restore and my computer went back to normal.

But then a few days later the same virus came back, but not in full force. It apparently was installed (but hidden) in my system and it wasn't active so my computer was still functional though it was behaving weird. For instance, if I watch one of my movies or play something on Windows Media Player, it will work fine for a few minutes and then randomly close itself. Not only that, in order to open a media file, I can't just simply click on it. I have to right click and choose "open with" and then select WMP. Lastly, when I google search a topic and click on one of the results, often times it will redirect me to an ad or otherwise completely unrelated site or a malicious site.

I have since tried using my spyware programs, including recently downloaded Malwarebytes and they seemingly got rid of more traces of the fraud antivirus programs even though they weren't showing up as installed programs in my computer. I have also tried running system restore a few more times but now every time I try that it says "restoration incomplete. No settings were changed. etc".

So I'm not even sure if this is a Malwarebytes problem but I have spent basically the last 2 whole days trying to fix this and I'm running out of options. I don't know where to go for help so I'm just asking anyone I can. Any help is greatly appreciated.

P.S. If you tell me what I need to do, please tell me how to do it STEP BY STEP. I am extremely incompetent when it comes to computers. The PC in question is running on Windows XP if that helps at all. Please have patience and bare with me as I probably will have several questions along the way.

Welcome to Malwarebytes! To get you fixed up please follow these instructions:

follow these instructions & post it in the HiJackLog Forum please

Scan and post logs - read note at bottom in green

If you're having Malware related issues with your computer that you're unable to resolve.

  1. Please read and follow the instructions provided here: I'm infected - What do I do now?
  2. If needed please post your logs in a NEW topic here: Malware Removal - HijackThis Logs
  3. When posting logs please do not use any Quote, Code, or other tags. Please copy/paste directly into your post and do not attach files unless requested.

  • Please do not post any logs in the General forum. We do not work on any logs posted in the General forum.
  • Please do not install any software or use any removal/scanning tool except for those you're requested to run by the Helper that will assist you.
  • Using these other tools often makes the cleanup task more difficult and time consuming.
  • If you have already submitted for assistance at one of the other support sites on the Internet then you should not post a new log here, you should stay working with the Helper from that site until the issue is resolved.
  • Do not assume you're clean because you don't see something in the logs. Please wait until the person assisting you provides feedback.
  • There are often many others that require asistance as well, so please be patient. If no one has responded within 48 hours then please go ahead and post a request for review

NOTE: If for some reason you're unable to run some or any of the tools in the first link, then skip that step and move on to the next one. If you can't even run HijackThis, then just proceed and post a NEW topic as shown in the second link describing your issues and someone will assist you as soon as they can.
