Prevent MBAM Premium From Loading

Recommended Posts

I have MBAM premium and have been using it for years. Since installing the latest version of Kaspersky Internet Security, I've been having issues with KIS trying to load twice. Their support tells me it's a conflict and to uninstall MBAM. I prefer not to do that and would rather just keep MBAM as an on-demand scanner, but no matter what settings I change MalwareBytes loads with Windows 10. I've disabled all active protection, turned off "start with Windows", but it still auto loads with Windows.

Is there a way to prevent MBAM from loading?

Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

I suspect the root of all of your problems (both with Malwarebytes and Kaspersky) is actually a feature in Windows 10 called Fast Startup, not a conflict (particularly since we have many users running KIS with Malwarebytes Premium without any issues at all, and it's a combination I've used myself in the past on my own systems).  To test, please disable Fast Startup and then reboot your system to see if both applications now behave themselves as they should.  Instructions on how to do so along with additional info about the problems with Fast Startup can be found here as well as here.

Please let us know how it goes and if any of the problems persist.

Thanks

Thank you very much and I will indeed try disabling fast startup on the three systems that are affected by this issue. However, can you tell me how to prevent MBAM Premium from loading at Windows startup (please note as mentioned in my first post that I've tried the obvious methods).

Malwarebytes shouldn't run at startup if you disable the option under Settings>Protection under Startup Options called Start Malwarebytes at Windows Startup, however you need to be sure that when toggling the switch for that setting off, that you don't click and drag it even though it looks like a switch; just click on it once to change it.  You can try toggling it on and then off again by clicking on it once then clicking on it once more to see if that fixes the issue.

If the problem still persists then I'd advise checking to see if you have any sort of system recovery software or rollback software running that might be restoring all your settings on reboot.

I appreciate your response. I am very technically competent (am on staff at several top Windows support forums) and understand how to toggle a switch LOL. The issue is that regardless of the settings within the app, MBAM loads and is present in the notification area upon reboot. And no, nothing is changing the switch to "on" - it is off even when it loads.

No problem, I mentioned the switch because there's actually a known bug in the Malwarebytes UI where settings changes don't actually take effect (even though the switch changes position) when the controls are dragged rather than just clicked so that's why I mentioned it.

The only other potential cause I can think of is perhaps Malwarebytes' configuration files are corrupt causing it to fail to honor its settings correctly.  Please try the following, and hopefully it will correct the problem:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Clean button, and allow it to restart your system and then reinstall Malwarebytes, either by allowing the tool to do so when it offers to on restart, or by downloading and installing the latest version from here

Thanks again, but since this occurs on three separate and distinctly different systems I have to doubt that's the issue. I'm going to uninstall it on my work computer and see if that clears up the KIS problem. If it does, I'll have to assume there is indeed some sort of conflict and hope that KIS provides enough protection. As for the seeming but regarding MBAM loading when set to not do so, I'll continue to fight that battle on the other two systems for now ;)

Sounds good, please let us know how it goes.  Also, if you wouldn't mind grabbing us some logs from one of the affected system where Malwarebytes is still installed and still having the issue with not honoring the startup option please do the following:

  1. Run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Thanks
