Hi,

Noticed somehow Personal Anti-Virus had installed on my pc and was saying I needed to purchase it to remove a virus. Ran Malwarebytes and it keeps saying it needs to reboot to delete uacinit.dll that it has found, but on reboot it won't start up. The only way to get the computer running again is to boot into safemode then restart again but it still finds the same file.

Here are my Malwarebytes log and Highjack This log:

Hi,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Thanks for the reply,

I updated Malwarebytes to 1.41 and ran the scan and same 2 infections came up and prompted me to reboot. Then I ran into some problems getting the system to boot, even in safe mode. Eventually i was able to get onto the computer and ran the scans again.

Here are the logs:

Hi,

I see malwarebytes removed the detection, but you need to reboot your computer back to normal mode to let it finish. This because malwarebytes has to run after reboot (since it's set this way).

Also, I see you have the Ask Toolbar installed. Please uninstall it since this one is not recommended.

Then, once you've done above, rebooted back to normal mode, make a new HijackThislog and post it in your next reply.

BTW....

Then I ran into some problems getting the system to boot, even in safe mode. Eventually i was able to get onto the computer and ran the scans again.
Can you give more info about this? What exact problems did you get?

So i've uninstalled asktoolbar, rebooted and ran malwarebytes and highjackthis again, it seems there are no more infections but I'll let you tell me when it's all clear. I'll post both their logs below.

The problem I experienced with booting the computer at first was this: I updated Malwarebytes to 1.41 and ran the scan again. It detected the same infected files and prompted me to reboot. But when rebooting it would get to the Windows loading screen and reboot again in a continuous cycle.

I tried booting in safe mode and it loaded up to System32\Drivers\Mup.sys stalled and rebooted again.

I then tried booting in "Last known working configuration" and after doing a DSKCHK it would just reboot.

Tried booting in regular safe mode (Without networking) and the first time it started to load the user select screen but a quick warning came up saying not enough virtual memory....(didn't have time to finish reading it) and then rebooted again. I tried that setting one more time and it finally let me select a user and run the scans again (the logs that were posted above), and has been booting fine since.

The most recent logs for both scans are these:

Thanks for the explanation.

Yes, this is a common known problem when this malware is present. It's not because of any scanners, but actually because of the malware itself since it's a rootkit and especially this one makes the system extremely instable. Even without any scan this could have happened after a reboot. I see this everyday with this malware present.

Anyway, good everything is up and running again here.

Just some leftovers we have to delete...

First of all, please uninstall the Ask Toolbar since this one is not recommended.

Reboot afterwards.

After reboot,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: pajykd.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: qoMCrOii - qoMCrOii.dll (file missing)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then rescan with HijackThis and post the log in your next reply+also let me know what problems you are still having. :)

I thought I had already deleted asktoolbar, is it still showing in the scans? I could not find it in the "add/remove programs" list but i did find the folder and ran the uninstall application. The only thing left is another folder called AskSearch with a subfolder "bin" and a file in there labelled "DefaultSearch.dll". Should i delete that too?

I've gone ahead and fixed the checks you said, here is the log:

Anything else left to do?

Hi,

The only thing left is another folder called AskSearch with a subfolder "bin" and a file in there labelled "DefaultSearch.dll". Should i delete that too?
The DefaultSearch.dll should already be gone now; because I asked you to check and fix that reference in HijackThis.

But yes, please delete the folder C:\Program Files\AskSearch

Good you don't see any problems anymore, so I guess we are done here. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
