Quarantine Function Hanging

Recommended Posts

I did a scan and it found a lot of threats. I tried to quarantine 2 of them, as a test, and for the last 30 minutes all I see is the spinning circle telling me that 0 of 2 treats have been quarantined. On another PC this process takes seconds.  Why is MB unable to do this routine process?

I later stumbled onto the reason behind my problem.

I was trying to run MB on an old laptop I rarely use, one with Win-XP.  When I opened MB, I was not surprisingly prompted to download and install the current version of MB.  The install failed with some error code.  I looked up the code and was directed to a legacy version of MB, compatible with Win-XP.  I downloaded it and ran the install.  MB opened up but when I ran the scan, it gave me about 2,000 threats.  When I tried to quarantine even one of them, it hung like I described yesterday.

But it dawned on me that I had never done an official UNinstall of MB before  ran the current legacy version.  So, I did the uninstall before running the current legacy version.  Then I ran a scan.  Oddly, it found only a few hundred threats, but I don't know if any of them were among the 2,000 threats I saw before.  I hit the Quarantine button and they got quarantined normally.  It was a little slow, but nothing terrible.

I can only surmise that running the legacy version the first time somehow was using a different, probably older list of threats, some of which are no longer considered threats. In fact, many of the threats in the earlier scan were from a program called CouponBar, something which was voluntarily installed on the laptop legitimately and something was excluded from quarantine before.  I assume that MB no longer considers this a threat?

So, I now have the current version of MB which is working normally.
