1.3.1 not finding new rules

Recommended Posts

As of yesterday I tried updating the rules on a couple of machines that have 1.3.1 installed (on High Sierra and El Capitan) that previously were working fine, and the new definitions are not being downloaded. I don't see any error but rather am stuck with definitions from early April when I last used the tool. Any ideas as to what can be causing this? Known issue maybe?

I can only guess that something you are using on the second Mac is blocking access to the Internet site that is responsible for definition updates. Are you using any 3rd party firewall software (e.g. Little Snitch)? If so you need to check that Malwarebytes and RTProtection have are allowed full access to requested Internet servers.

I must ask why you are still running 1.3.1 on High Sierra and El Capitan. The current version is 3.8 which runs on macOS 10.10 and above.

1.3.1 is technically no longer supported, but in reality they appear to still be delivering database updates. 3.x is capable of detecting or blocking things that 1.3.1 can't. The change initially affected real-time protection, which 1.3.1 doesn't have, but over time the capabilities have diverged further, as other new capabilities are added and newer rules are created. Although real-time protection is an optional premium feature (with a 30-day free trial), the basic version is still free.
