Licence activation issue

Recommended Posts

I have a lifetime license and  just manually  upgraded to 3.7.1

Why has my license been deactivated after update?........Asking for activation with a 13 day free trial period.

Why do I have to re-enter my activation keys after this update? I've never had to before unless doing a clean install of MB.

I waited a long time to update MB from 3.6 because of all the previous issues and now there's a license issue! It doesn't surprise me as I've grown used to MB causing havoc after updates but geeeez it's starting to get a little ridiculous.

So do I enter my license or is there a soon to be released update that fixes this issue?

Just tried entering my license.

It won't activate!

This is the error message......Maximum installations allowed.

The usage level has exceeded the maximum installations allowed. There is a problem with your  license key and we are unable to activate your license.

I only have MB installed on 1 PC. My home desktop on my SSD main drive and my HDD back up drive. This how It's been for years and was told by Liquid Tension that it's OK to have MB on both drives on same PC.

I've got no idea what email address I had when I purchased lifetime MB Pro because it was donkeys years ago. I'm one of the originals that helped you guys get to where you are now with that purchase. Back when MB was version 1.xxx

You can sign up at My.Malwarebytes.com using your current email address and use the option there to add a license key and it should add that lifetime license to that account so that you can manage it.  Once that's done you should be able to use the Deactivate all function to reset the number of installations/activations so that you can get it activated on your system once more.  The links in my post above provide all the details on how to do this.

If you still have trouble or would rather have Support reset the key for you then you may either wait for @LiquidTension to return or you may contact Malwarebytes Support directly via the last link in my post above and they will be able to take care of it for you.  I suspect that the reason for this issue is due to recent changes in the license activation system on the backend in the most recent version of Malwarebytes though I haven't heard anything official from anyone within the company so that's just my personal speculation based on my own observations recently.

Hi exile360

Thanks for the uber fast response and for the update that 3.7.1 has license activation issues. Who would of thought...lol.

So sorry I updated MB now and it really feels like MB has dropped the ball with this. We shouldn't have to deactivate and reactivate license after an update.

I will sign up with My.Malwarebytes.com with my current email and see how I go.

Yeah, it's definitely a hassle, but hopefully it will pay off in the long run.  The upgrades really are worth it though, as I have been watching since version 3.0 was first released and I've observed all of the issues/bugs that have come up and seen first-hand how the product has become more stable with each release, including this most recent one (though obviously this issue is a nuisance for those affected by it; though of course I could be wrong about that and it may in fact just be coincidence and reinstalling it a set number of times just causes it to reach the limit for the number of devices/activations, even if done on the same system, though this too is just speculation on my part as it is only a possibility).

Anyway, I do hope you are able to get it working properly again, but please let us know if you still have any problems and we'll do our best to help.

I signed up as suggested. Entered my license key and i.d and received a message saying that the license is already registered. Yeh, it's registered to me! So frustrated with MB rite now!

As a long term MB user, Update 3.7.1 is the worst I've come across because of this activation issue. It's Easter long weekend and I got better things to be doing. I'm guessing that the email address I used when I purchased lifetime MB Pro many years ago may have something to do with it, as it's not the same as the one I'm using now. I don't know?

This is even more outrageous then the BSOD's, freezes, lock-ups and crashes I've endured over the MB journey.

Are there any MB staff members that can help me with this?

To add to my last post.

I signed up with my real name just now but I can't remember if I used my real name when I purchased MB Pro. Back in those days I would sometimes use a phony surname for online digital purchases, with pre-paid gift credit cards. It was such a long time ago.

I'd suggest going ahead and contacting Support directly to deal with this.  I definitely don't want you to have to go without your protection any longer if possible.  Please fill out the form on the bottom of this page to submit a support ticket and they will be able to look up your license info and get everything reset so that you can activate it again on your system.

I'm still protected on a MB free trial period. I can wait until staff members return for some clarity. When I purchased MB Pro many moons ago, If I remember correctly, you were allowed to have it on 3 systems as long as they were your own personal home computers. I do recall a friend having MB Pro on 3 systems.

When I built my current PC I installed MB on it. At that time, for a short period of around 2-3 months, it was installed on 2 systems with no issues. My laptop and newly built PC. I wiped my laptop and retired it and since then I've had it only on my Desktop PC build. Almost 3 years ago I updated my PC with a SSD and since then I've had MB installed on both drives. My SSD and HDD both on W7. HDD is rarely used and thank you to exile360 for helping me bring it back to it's former glory....Areo theme issue....and so on.

Yesterday when I updated to 3.7.1 it was on my HDD. I use this as a Back up drive, storage and as a test mule for software. I thought I would test drive 3.7.1 before updating my main drive. My SSD is on 3.6.1 which is activated with full protection.

I found this linked page after a search. It suggests that you can only have MB premium on one operating system. I just checked a PM with Liquid Tension from Jan/22 where he said " Lifetime licenses are typically for use on only one computer at a time." I mentioned in an earlier post he said I could have it on multiple drives on same PC. My apologizes for that. I was wrong as he never said that. Oooops.....lol.

Before proceeding any further I would like clarification on this from a MB staff member or anyone else that knows for sure. Can you have a Lifetime license installed on 1 computer on 2 drives? This could be my issue. When I try to activate 3.7.1 it's prompting me to deactivate other device. This is my SSD MB 3.6.1 which is activated on same PC.

Still can't register my license to manage it on my newly created account on My.Malwarebytes.com. I will need some assistance with this.

It depends on the type of license.  The lifetime licenses were always just for a single device, while some of the yearly subscription licenses are for 3 devices (in fact when Malwarebytes first went to a subscription licensing model, all of the subscription licenses were initially for 3 devices; they later changed it to allow users to purchase single device licenses for a lower price).

Hello @SubyTooner

Sorry for the issue. All lifetime licenses were for 1 system only. The last lifetime license sold by us was almost 4 years ago. We probably will not be able to assist with your activation until Monday. Please send me a private message with your purchase information and license information and I will submit it to our Licensing Team.

Thank you

Ron

Thanks Ron and PM sent with my details for My.Malwarebytes.com account assistance.

Firstly my apologies for my attitude in previous posts.

I just updated to 3.7.1 on my main drive without any issues. Didn't have to enter my license as per usual and MB showing my lifetime license and has full activation. I was unaware you could only have a lifetime license on only 1 system and don't know why for the last 3 years MB has been working with full activation on both my drives on same PC. The drives have slightly different device names too. Weird...lol.

With my back up drive which is now on a Premium trail period. Will this revert to MB free(if there is such a thing) after the trail period or will I need to buy a license to have any functionality?

Once the trial expires it will revert to the free version.  The features of the free version are manual scans, including context menu scans when you right-click on any file or folder or drive as well as the standard Threat scans and Custom scans as well as unlimited threat detections and removals.  What you lose are all of the real-time protection components as well as scheduled updates and scans, however you may continue to use it as a scan/remediation tool for as long as you'd like.  I do not know if they will allow you to use your license on both drives or not so I can't speak to that, however someone from Support can answer that I'm sure.

That explains what I was seeing  🙂  I have a lifetime license and I was being told that I had more than one computer with that license. I also have a 2-computer license. So I deactivated the "unknown" second computer on my lifetime so now all seems to be OK (I did move from one computer to another so that's probably why it had two). Now as I understand it, the lifetime license is what it says and I'll continue to receive updates for that licence. However, the other one is with an annual subscription, which was just renewed. Please correct me if I missed something.

From the My Account page, you should be able to manage the license on your own in most cases. If you're unable to then we may need to open a ticket with support to assist with that.

Yes, the license should only activate on one system for the Lifetime license. The subscription licensing has different amounts depending on what you've purchased. The lifetime is good for as long as we're in business but you need to keep a copy of your purchase information to ensure verification if needed.

If you're still having issues with your license please let me know.

Thank you

Ron
