What do I do after Malwarebytes quarantines files on Mac?

Recommended Posts

I made the mistake of trusting a website that was supposed to be selling something off of Facebook. Since then Malwarebytes has quarantined files twice and asked to reboot.

The first time I rebooted then choose clear quarantines files thinking that was enough. Then the warning came up again. This time I choose clear quarantines files. Is this enough to fix the problem?

Also, since this attack has occurred I get these new home pages showing up on Safari and Google Chrome that are a clear result of the attack. Below is a screen shot of the page.

What should I do? Thanks

See this pinned topic at the top of the Mac Malware Removal Help & Support Forum: How to remove WeKnow malware (and others)

Thank you. I will follow the direction.

Since I have always done my banking and shopping on this Mac, should I consider getting my hard rive reformatted? Or are the directions on this link enough?

Also, will a virus be transmitted to other files, such as graphic or photo images to an external hard drive? Is it best to turn off time-machine?

Thank you for your help.

I would have to know the name of the infection(s) found and version of macOS in order to answer your first question authoritatively, but it would be extremely rare for you to ever need to do anything that drastic these days.

Since there are no known viruses that can impact macOS, there is zero chance that it could have spread to any other files, drives or devices. There are many other types of malware (some Trojans but mostly adware) and PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), but none of them spread. If you have backup drives, then they would be copied there, but removing them is generally too difficult, so I always recommend ignoring those as they will eventually be deleted over time and remember to do a scan immediately after any restoration.

Good advice.

I can go to my external hard drive via time-machine and delete the backups up until this virus hit my computer.

How can I find out the name of this infection? Now that I run Malwarebytes the virus no longer shows up. However, the infected files are still on my computer since the Search page is still here. I am going to follow the directions you linked me to shortly.

By the way, does my subscription to Malwarebytes offer a download to my iPhone as well? Or is that a separate service?

I appreciate your help.

Separate. The Premium subscription for your Mac can be used for Widows, Android and Chromebook platforms, but has to be purchased separately from Apple for your iPhone.

Will that AppCleaner be enough to remove all the malicious configuration profiles that come with a virus?

Not unless the infection was an application, which would be rare.

That's unfortunate.  It's unfair and surprising.  Why single out the iPhone for another purchase when the Android is free?
