Malware Bytes or Windows Defender detected 5 trojan and key stroke viruses on my system more than a year ago.  They were quarantined and removed.  But for more than a year at startup I have been getting warnings that my recycle bin is corrupted.  When I open the recycle bin it indicates it is empty.  I have tried removing the recycle bin which is located on my detachable Western Digital Password hard drive, but the recycle bin corruption reports continue.  I have written to Microsoft asking for assistance and tried working with the Microsoft Community to find a solution - without success.  Innumerable post start-up scans by Malware Bytes and Windows Defender do no report  virus presence.  I am concerned that I can't seem to replace the damaged recycle bin, and that whatever the corruption is resists being deleted.  I need some help with this problem.  Thanks.

nasdaq,  thank you for your message.  I have downloaded the article and am stuck on the very first step.  FYI - I received an earlier message from PW1 encouraging me to download the FARBAR recovery scan tool software - which I attempted to do, but Malwarebytes prevented being downloaded.  This morning's scan showed 35 new PUP threats, whicjh I quarantined.  It is difficult to call without a telephone number.  Oldsalt.

Sorry @Oldsalt looks like the part @nasdaq wanted you to print or follow did not post for him so I'll repost so you can get to work on it.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here

  • Right-click on the MBAM icon and select Run as administrator to run the tool.
  • Click Yes to accept any security warnings that may appear.
  • Once the MBAM dashboard opens, on the right detail pane click on the word "Current" under the Scan Status to update the tool database.
  • On the left menu pane click the Settings tab, and then select the Protection tab on the top.
  • Under the Scan Options, turn on the button Scan for rootkits and Scan within archives.
  • Click the Scan tab on the right detail pane, select Threat Scan and click the Start Scan button
  • Note: The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • If potential threats are detected, ensure to check mark all the listed items, and click the Quarantine Selected button.
  • While still on the Scan tab, click the View Report button, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
  • The log can also be viewed by clicking the log to select it, then clicking the View Report button.

Please post the log for my review.

Note: If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Ron...yes I am still here - babysitting commitments and tax preparation took priority.  I also read about catastrophic data loss from using the Farbar tool.  And I recall using Adware Cleaner in the past...I thought it was a malicious software.

I have downloaded your instructions and will try them tomorrow morning, after a god nights rest.  The nuisance "corrupted recycle bin" message did not appear after the latest Microsoft Windows update, but is back again at startup.

Thanks for your follow up.  I will try your suggested solution tomorrow morning.

Sounds good. Follow the directions from @nasdaq and he'll get you fixed up.

I would recommend doing a Full disk check to ensure data integrity.

Click on Start and type in CMD.EXE and when it shows on the menu right click and select "Run as administrator" then type in the folloiwng.

CHKDSK C: /R

It will say it cannot lock the drive and ask if you want to run it after a restart. Press the Y key on the keyboard and then the Enter key. Then restart the computer to have it run.

NOTE: A full disk check potentially takes many hours to complete depending on the size of the disk and speed of the computer. You may want to run it just before going to bed.

Cheers

Ron

No luck...I am not having any success just following nasdaq's instructions.  I have downloaded a google search article "recycle bin is corrupted" and one other article "Fix Corrupted Recycle Bin in Windows 10 without Losing Data - EaseUS, but have yet to see any recycle bin file for the affected drives.  I must be missing a step or not understanding the key stroke directions.  Feel free to drop my inquiry.  Pretty discouraged here.
