v3.7.1.2839 causing lag

Recommended Posts

I just got a new(to me) Dell Precision laptop.  It had a brand new install of Windows 10 Pro 64bit installed.  The first thing I did, as I always do, is install Malwarebytes.  I have Premium, and I downloaded the version referenced above, 3.7.1.2839, which according to everything I have seen is the latest version.  I noticed a lag when I right-clicked on the desktop before a menu came up(~3 seconds), or an icon in the system tray(about the same), and I found that when I clicked on the Windows Explorer icon on the taskbar, it took 7 seconds for the window to be displayed, and another 2-3 seconds for it to be populated. All of these seemed excessive, so I disabled Windows Defender using the policy editor.  No change, even after reboot. I disabled the Malwarebytes protections, and nothing changed, once again even after a reboot. I uninstalled Malwarebytes, and suddenly things were vastly better. Right-click menus pop up instantly, and Explorer races along(lol, for Explorer) with about a 2 second lag, and the window paints immediately. This seems to affect ALL programs when they start, as splash screens when Malwarebytes is installed take several seconds, and when it is not, they are almost instant.

I have had problems with updates to Malwarebytes in the past slowing down the system, but normally I can revert to an earlier version to fix the problem, and I see comments all over the net about the issue. This time I have no way to go backward, as the latest is the only version I can find, and I do not see people complaining.  Is there some super secret ninja stuff that will fix this? Do I need to gather information to help you troubleshoot the issue?  I cannot use the machine with this sort of lag, but I have to have Malwarebytes on my machines. HELP!

From looking at your logs, I suggest a visit to Dell's support site and install the proper/current drivers for your machine to start with.

This machine is older, and does not have support for all of the hardware in Windows 10.  HOWEVER, I would stress to you that the machine WORKS FINE WITHOUT Malwarebytes installed. If Malwarebytes causes issues because particular drivers are not up to date, that would be a first in my experience. I have not seen a piece of software(ie. not an OS) cause system-wide disruption because of a hardware driver.  I suppose video drivers have that as a possibility, as they can crash a machine with a particular game, but I am unaware of anything remotely like that with any other drivers.  My experience in this are goes back to the times before the original IBM PC. Not to say it is impossible, just not, IMHO, a realistic possibility. Unless Malwarebytes accesses the hardware or the drivers in a totally unique way, I do not see how a driver issue could cause these problems, given the fact that the machine runs fine until the application is installed.

I have all the current drivers.  Dell does not have some of the drivers for this machine available for Win 10 64.

Did they have the below drivers?

I don't go back to the IBM days but even though your machine is older, I would take it in a heartbeat.

A staff member will chime in shortly.

Except for the Intel GPU, which I disabled to make sure only the Nvidia was running when displaying the desktop, sadly no.  The Broadcom is for the fingerprint reader, which of course is unnecessary for normal operation.  The serial port, well, it has lots of USB.  The mass storage I would have thought was from Intel, but when I went to their site I had it ID the components, and it said everything was the latest versions.  The unknown device is unknown to me as well. I tried all the drivers on the Dell site, and most of them said I had newer ones installed already.  Others said they did not work on my OS. I suspect if I installed Win7 I could get them all working, but I really need 10.  So many old components do not have drivers past whatever OS was out when they were built, and laptops are especially difficult if the vendor does not keep stuff updated.  If I had to revert to Win7, I might go to the 32 bit version for compatibility with more things, but Win7 is getting so old, I would hate to do that. I just got the machine to run Windows, so I would hate to run Linux, although I would probably have a lot less driver issues, as the Linux community tends to keep older stuff around longer, and they make their own drivers.

This is always an adventure, much as I want to just get some work done...

I have an e6520 latitude from the Vista 2nd generation I5 that runs 10 with working drivers for everything. Wish yours was a 6800, Better 10 support.
