Cannot access website

Recommended Posts

Thanks for reading this.  Am using the latest versions of Windows 10 Home OS and Microsoft Edge Browser.  Have Microsoft Edge Browser set to:  'Don't Block Cookies'. Nonetheless when I try to log on to a particular website - it shows the following message:  Your browser currently has cookies disabled. You cannot sign in without cookies enabled. You will need to change this option in order to sign in.

Added the site to Exclusions on Malwarebytes.   Still getting the same message on  Malwarebytes Premium Free Trial.  Does anyone know why that is the case.  Contacted the people who run the website.  They do not  see a reason for this on their end.  Thanks.

Greetings,

I'm not sure, but if you use any other security applications for protection and/or privacy then that could be the cause.  Anything like the Immunize feature in Spybot Search & Destroy, Spywareblaster or a privacy/security related HOSTS file such as the ones provided by MVPS HOSTS or the ones provided by hpHOSTS then that could be the cause.  Also, if you're surfing in private mode then that would block the cookies.  That's about all I can think of that might cause it unless the site just isn't compatible with Edge for some reason in which case you could try an alternative browser to see if they are able to work properly such as Google Chrome or any Chromium based alternative such as Vivaldi or SRWare Iron, Opera, or Mozilla Firefox.

You could also do the following and we could take a look to see if there's anything obvious that might be causing the cookies to be blocked:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

OK, and I assume you haven't modified any other settings, and since it happens with the other two browsers that eliminates any issue specific to the one browser so it either must be system wide or it's just an issue on their end.  The only other item that might be worth checking would be the following registry keys to see if there are any keys beneath them, especially for the site in question where you're seeing this issue:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\P3P\History
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\P3P\History
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\P3P\History

If you expand the History key and see a list of keys there, especially one for the website you're having this issue with, then that would explain it as that's where a setting is stored that can be used to block cookies for any websites listed there.

I'm not sure unless there's some kind of compatibility issue or plugin/extension, or program that affects those browsers but doesn't affect Internet Explorer.  Do you have anything like an ad blocker or privacy filter plugin installed in your other browsers like uBlock, Adblock Plus, Ghostery, Disconnect or anything like that?  If so, one of those could be the culprit.

Thanks so much for all the info, Exile 360.  Tried turning off Pop-Up Blocker and Smart Screen Filter on the Microsoft Edge Browser.  That did not help.  Made sure the site in question was whitelisted under Internet Options on the Control Panel and turned down the Security Permissions to the Lowest Possible Level and that did not work.

Have not added any Ad Blocker or privacy filter plugin -  those you mentioned or others.  I tried to log in to that site with the Opera Browser without enabling VPN on Opera and I was able to log in using the Opera browser, in addition to being able to log in with Internet Explorer.  Someone told me Opera was not supported for that website at least.  Could you please tell me if my ISP is blocking that website?  Thanks.

I don't know, but it's certainly a possibility.  It could also just be a quirk/compatibility issue with your particular version of Windows and/or Edge, especially since Microsoft has been making a lot of changes to Windows 10 lately with all these big updates they've been pushing out.  You should be able to bypass your ISP by using an alternate DNS provider such as OpenDNS, DNSCrypt, Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS, or Google DNS.

do have a question with that though.  How difficult would it be to get rid of the alternate service provider and switch back to using my ISP instead.

No problem.  My guess though is that it's probably just some kind of weird browser issue, especially if you can log in with some browsers but not others.  I have noted that many websites these days won't enable cookies automatically until you click some kind of option that you agree to their privacy terms/agree to enable cookies because of the new privacy laws in the European Union.  Here's an example of what I'm referring to from the Malwarebytes support site:

privacy.thumb.png.d31fde39c5e3dce1a755b20276de9961.png

If their website uses such a pop-up/notification (it can look different from that and may show up at the top, bottom or even in the middle of the page), then you'd need to click "yes/allow/continue/accept/I agree" etc. before it would try to store cookies on your system.  If for some reason the browser doesn't display the dialog/pop-up (again, assuming the site in question uses one, though most do these days) like perhaps because of a rendering issue/compatibility issue with the browser and the website's scripting/layout then you wouldn't be able to login because the site would never be given permission to use cookies.  You might check with the people who run the site to see if they use such a dialog/prompt because if you aren't seeing it when you visit their site then that could be the problem.

It's easy.  You just change the setting back from having it use the custom DNS to having it automatically detect your DNS settings and it will default to the standard setting to use your ISP.

Thanks exile 360 - this definitely belongs in the "You know you're not a techie when category'.   Whenever I went to that website to log in - for security purposes - I always deleted the Cookies and website data before logging in.  I never had a problem logging in to that site when I did that.  To be sure of being safe - I was deleting the cookies and website data on the page where you logged in - in other words right where the spaces are for you to put in your user name and password.  Just now, I tried not deleting the cookies and website data on the log in page but on the one immediately before that to be safe and secure.  Not deleting the cookies and website data on the log in page enabled me to log in with no difficulty at all.

Tried deleting that using the Google DNS provider instead of my ISP and that did not help - so  I know my ISP was not blocking that website - will have to change it back now.  Thanks so much for help Exile 360 - sure appreciate all that.

I checked the spot where it says:  Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically - that was what it was originally set to.

Hehe, go figure.  All this troubleshooting and the solution turns out to be something so simple.  It didn't even occur to me that this could be the cause of the issue, but I'm glad that you were able to figure it out, well done :)!

Yes, here's what you should see for your DNS settings for your internet connection.  Just make sure that the item circled in red[/url] is selected/checked and then click on OK and you should be all set:

Anyway, I'm glad that you were finally able to resolve the problem, and if there's anything else we might assist you with, please don't hesitate to ask.
