Removal of call and SMS features

Recently, Google changed their rules about apps that are allowed to access call and SMS permissions. These changes affected many apps, and ours was unfortunately among them.

We appealed this decision, but the appeals ultimately did not go in our favor, as Google has determined that no antivirus or security apps should be allowed to use these permissions. For information on these restrictions, see:

Note under Invalid Uses that "Anti-virus / Security" is listed as not allowed to use these permissions.

We're extremely disappointed in this decision. We suspect - although this is speculation that has not been confirmed - that this is the result of some fake antivirus apps misusing those permissions, and selling or otherwise abusing the data that they were able to collect with those permissions. (This is why we can't have nice things!)

For this reason, we have removed the following features from Malwarebytes for Android 3.6:

  • Call Protection
  • Scan links sent via SMS
  • SMS Device Control

We're sincerely sorry for any inconvenience this causes, and we're exploring future options regarding these features.

At the time of this writing, Malwarebytes for Android 3.6 is being metered out slowly to a small percentage of users (as we do with all new releases), so don't be surprised if you don't see the update to 3.6 yet.
