  • tetonbob changed the title to Ransomware protection cannot be turned on

It happened again on a different computer. I repaired MB the same way as  before. This time I found out what did it. On both computers a Microsoft Edge (which I never use) icon showed up on the desktop. So it is Microsoft which is breaking Malwarebytes. I just thought I would let everyone know.

Thanks for the update.

If the issue occurs again, ideally we will need the troubleshooting logs mentioned earlier to look further into the issue. Please avoid using the Support Tool to run a repair of Malwarebytes. Instead, if the issue does occur once more, please run the Support Tool and click Advanced followed by Gather Logs. Please hold off clicking the Start Repair button.

You will need to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 in order to receive the update: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows8ISO

Does this mean that you are removing support for Windows 7?

Not at all. In @paolofaiella's case, the issue stems from an outdated Windows 8 version.

A fully up-to-date Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installation will have the necessary update that allows for more than 8 PsSetLoadImageNotifyRoutine registrations. Due to paolofaiella's outdated Windows 8 version, this update is missing.

Greetings,

If the cause of your issue is the same as the OP then you should be able to correct it by running Windows Update, however I suspect it's a different issue just because it's Windows 10 and not 8 as the OP had, but it's still worth a try to see if it helps.

Otherwise, if that doesn't help then you could also try updating Malwarebytes to the latest version as you don't have the latest build installed.  To do so open Malwarebytes and navigate to Settings>Application and click on the Install Application Updates button and allow it to download and install the latest version and reboot if prompted to do so to complete the installation process.

Once that's done, check to see if Malwarebytes is now functioning with all protection components active and let us know how it goes.

Thanks

The RANSOMWARE & MALWARE protections won't turn ON.

I tried reinstalling my 3.7.1.2839 but to no avail.

I tried running the Support Tool but no luck.

Without gathering LOGS, isn't there a common reason for this problem?

I'm sure this has been happening to many.

I'm using Windows 8.

Thanks.

Steve

So far the only single confirmed issue I'm aware of is one with Windows 8 which is due to a missing Windows Update (one that you can only get by updating to Windows 8.1, so if you don't have 8.1 yet you'll need to upgrade to it first then install any available Windows Updates).

If that doesn't resolve it, the only other common cause I've seen recently was due to what I believe to be a new infection preventing some or all Malwarebytes programs from working properly.  If you suspect that it might be an infection then please read and follow the instructions in this topic and create a new thread in the malware removal area including the requested logs and information by clicking here to have one of our malware removal specialists assist you as soon as one becomes available.

Hi Steve,

There are many different causes of Real-Time Protection issues. We will need to review the log file generated by the Malwarebytes Support Tool to help determine the cause in your case.

Please consider providing the file so we can investigate further. If you do not wish to post the file publicly, you are welcome to send it to me in a Private Message.
