Recommended Posts

Hello,

Just to let you know:

Running 2 pc on Win7 /64 fully updated , with the latest MBAM and MSE on one and BitDefender free on another  with  "WEB PROTECTION OFF"

I did not experienced any problems / freezing ever

Now, if you disable Web protection , reboot and make sure the associated driver for Web protection ( C:\Windows\system32\drivers\mwac.sys ) it is not loaded after reboot.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback @loco. In some of our first posts around this issue, we did identify the issue is with Web Protection and disabling it will serve as a workaround for users, but unfortunately that doesn't get us any closer to a solution. But for those who are unable to provide logs and don't have the time to help diagnose the issue, disabling Web Protection is a good workaround. I would recommend installing our Malwarebytes Extension for Chrome or Firefox if you disable Web Protection as this will help keep you protected while navigating websites at least: https://blog.malwarebytes.com/malwarebytes-news/betas/2018/07/introducing-malwarebytes-browser-extension/

Web Protection and Ransomware Protection are primary reasons we purchased MBAM.

Running MBAM without those features is not much different than using MSE by itself.

Most of my notifications from MBAM involve blocking malicious websites/scripts.

If you are experiencing this issue, can you please try the following:

  1. Remove Malwarebytes 3
  2. Install the Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Beta
  3. Use your computer as normal for awhile and see if the freeze happens again

Please respond to let us know if the freeze does/doesn't happen so we can rule out these changes. While we've gotten reports that disabling Web Protection solves the issue, current logs are pointing to Anti-Exploit potentially being part of the problem as well.

For those of you keeping Web Protection disabled you may wish to install the Malwarebytes browser extension beta which is available for Chrome (and other Chromium based browsers like SRWare Iron and Vivaldi) as well as Firefox.  It blocks the same sites as Web Protection in Malwarebytes 3, though only for your browser not for the entire system the way Web Protection does.  That said, it does have some advantages including blocking for many ads, tracking servers (to protect your privacy), clickbait links/sites, and it has behavior based blocking capabilities that target tech support scam sites and several other categories of malicious sites meaning it's actually capable of blocking many threats and undesirable sites that Web Protection in Malwarebytes 3 is not.  It is also fully compatible with Web Protection and the other features in Malwarebytes Premium so once this issue has been fixed you may continue to use the browser extension if you wish in order to keep those extra capabilities for your browser.

You can find out more and download the extension at the following links:

Chrome
Firefox
