If you haven’t already done so, please run the Malwarebytes Support Tool and then attach the logs in your next reply:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Once the file is downloaded, open your Downloads folder/location of the downloaded file
  3. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  4. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  5. You will be presented with a page stating, "Get Started!"
  6. Click the Advanced tab

  7. Click the Gather Logs button
  8. A progress bar will appear and the program will proceed with getting logs from your computer

  9. Upon completion, click a file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop. Click OK

  10. Please attach the file in your next reply. Before submitting your reply, be sure to enable "Notify me of replies" like so:

It really shouldn't take that long, however we have seen similar issues in the past which is why we generally recommend the Threat scan (the default scan type) over the Custom scan as it was designed by the Malwarebytes threat Researchers to look in all known locations where malware likes to hide.  If the Threat scan is taking that long to complete then there could be some kind of conflict, an infection on the system, a problem with your Malwarebytes installation, or disk/data/sector corruption on the drive causing it to get hung up.

Since drive corruption is a possibility, the first step I'd recommend would be to back up your important data from the drive to another location such as a second drive, an external drive, USB flash drive or some other location that way you are certain not to lose anything important should the drive fail in the future (it's a good idea anyway because no drive lasts forever).

Next, assuming you have your data backed up, please let us know what type of scan you were running (i.e. Threat scan (the default scan type) or a Custom scan (like choosing to scan the entire drive/system) and please do the following so that we may take a look at your system's configuration as well as your Malwarebytes installation to check for issues:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Thanks.  First, please try disabling Norton Security temporarily to see if that helps.  If so, then adding exclusions between the two programs could help speed things up.  To do so, add as many of the items listed in this support article to Norton's exclusions interface as you can for its scanner and real-time protection.  Excluding Norton's Program Files folder and ProgramData folder to Malwarebytes' exclusions should be sufficient, though you may also want to exclude any of its files located in other folders.

Once exclusions are created in the two programs for each other, restart the system and try a Threat scan with Malwarebytes again to see if things have improved.

Next, if all those scans were still slow, try booting into Safe Mode with Networking to see if the Threat scan works any better there.

Once you get a scan to complete (assuming you are able to), have Malwarebytes remove any threats it detects and restart if prompted, allowing the system to start normally to test and see if things are any better now.
