email of Sept newsletter re: crypto will not open

Recommended Posts

I received the newsletter yesterday via my msn email account. I have tried to open and read it but it will not open. I tried it on my Chromebook and my HP laptop. Neither device will open the newsletter. Any thoughts?

Possibly corrupt? What format was it in? I've had issues with PDFs from legitimate sources over the years that have been impossible to open, no matter what software I've tried to use.

Greetings,

I did find this recent post regarding the newsletter when using HTTPS Everywhere so it may be related to something similar on your devices if they have issues loading pages from standard HTTP sites.

https://www.malwarebytes.com/cryptojacking/?utm_source=double-opt-in&utm_medium=email-internal-b2c&utm_campaign=EM-B2C-2018-September-newsletter&utm_content=cryptojacking

When I click on the link to read the article this is in the address box. It is not a PDF. When I click on any of the stories contained in the link they do not open. It is https format as you have pointed out. I don't recall having any problems with opening this format in the past. Thanks.

Yes as before but any of the articles contained when the link is opened, do not open. Thanks.

If I go to the link https://www.malwarebytes.com/cryptojacking/  on my Nexus 7 2013, the links do open for me but are unreadable because the menu of options remains on the page and any link clicked on is displayed underneath. The page takes up 95+ % of the display and the link is only displayable if I swipe upwards until the bottom of the page is reached, then I can see the linked info, but only around a line at a time, so basically unreadable.

I see, it's because the auto-scrolling header/buttons cover up too much of the screen.  It likely hasn't been optimized for display on lower resolution mobile devices.  I will inform the team.

Thanks for reporting this.

I'm not sure as we still have yet to determine the cause, but if they can fix it they certainly will.

So to get back to your specific issues, you said that when you try to launch the newsletter link contained in the email, it fails to open and that even when you view the link in a browser, links contained in the article fail to open, is that accurate?  Is there anything else you can tell us?  For example, what happens if you right-click on the link and copy it then try to paste/open it in a web browser, does it open then or does it still fail?  Also, what happens when you click a link in the article exactly, does it just not navigate anywhere?  What if you right-click on a link in the article and select "open in new tab" or "open in new window" or if you try to copy the link and paste it into another browser window or tab, does it work then?

Sorry about the bombardment of questions, I'm just trying to narrow down the issue as much as possible.  Just take your time and do your best to describe what you see happening and let us know.

Thanks

No it does not fail to open when in the email. It opens but when I try to open any of the links contained in the document, they do not open. At the top of the document the words "Jump to" and then below that -- "latest cryptojacking news" with many other topics listed below that first line. None open. Also the touchpad on this chromebook does not want to right click on these words. Also, cannot copy the link in the document. No problem for questions. Know you need info. Thanks.

Ah, I see.  Those "Jump to" links on the left just scroll the page to various section within the same document/article, so it's possible that for whatever reason those controls don't work with your device's browser.  I will report this to the team to test, but I'm betting it has something to do with some kind of javascript restrictions in the browser you're using or something like that.
