No idea. There are different theories, mostly either that XProtect hasn't been the right way to handle threats since that time or that Apple is phasing out XProtect in favor of the Malware Removal Tool (MRT). I can't say which - if either - is the case.

Hmm, nothing like Apple for being transparent and keeping its users alerted to developments.
