Settings>Windows Context Menus - not working

Recommended Posts

MB Premium 3.44 updated to 3.51.2522  Web Protection OFF (can run Real time web protection with incurring BSOD)

Win Vista 64 SP2 - AMD Phenom II x4 920 MBO 8GB - ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series (MSI)

Samsung SDD 1TB

When I right-click on a downloaded file to scan with MWB the option to scan no longer appears.

Under Settings>Applications  I have  Windows Context Menus toggled to ON.

Rebooted, reloaded MWB still can scan a file with right-click.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

mick

Greetings,

Please do the following so that we might take a look at your Malwarebytes installation to attempt to determine what might be causing the issues and correct them:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced Options on the main page (not Get Started)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Thanks

Thanks, I took a look at your logs and they show a large number of blocked shell extensions, and while I didn't explicitly see an entry for the Malwarebytes extension that I could identify offhand, it is possible that it is among those being blocked via this method.  I assume you added these yourself via a third party tool such as Nirsoft's ShellExView or similar so I would recommend using whatever tool you used for that purpose to check and ensure that the Malwarebytes extension was not blocked by mistake.  If you did not block any of those entries deliberately please let me know as this could be a sign of a past or present malware infection which will determine what the next steps that should be taken are.

Additionally, if you haven't already, please download the most recent version of Malwarebytes for Windows Vista from here and try installing that (I know you mentioned you already had installed the latest, I just wanted to make certain you got it from our official download link as the copy you downloaded may have been outdated if from a different source or if downloaded too long ago).

Next, if the problem still remains, open Malwarebytes and try toggling the setting for context menu scanning off and then back on again, then reboot your system once more to check and see if it has now returned.  Sometimes this will correct an issue like this when other methods fail.

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks

John-

Thanks for the prompt response. I am now tracking thread on Malwarebytes 3 forum.

OK. installed Legacy version of MWB for Vista as directed/linked above (3.5.1.2522) . Should I have uninstalled earlier version first?

Btw, I left Real time Web Protection toggled OFF until we solve this problem as I have had many BSOD with earlier MWB version Web Protection ON. :)

Status:

1. You are correct that I disabled some context menu items as I was experiencing a very slow and flukey file explorer right-click. Turns out way too many items on menu. Shellview solved the problem by disabling many items . I opened Shellview and MWB is not listed in any file types filter including context menu...neither enabled or disabled...not even a reference to it. So it would appear that it might have something to do with the registry entry (?). Could this be caused by a virus?? It may well be a virus, as the right-click context menu in explorer was working a week ago when I last checked a download for a scan. Had not changed anything using Shellview since.

2. Toggled MWB Settings>Context Menu .ON/OFF/ON and rebooted the WIN Vista. Still no context menu entry for MWB.

Open for suggestions :)

Thank again John.

Hehe, my name isn't John (though I do have a brother by that name :) ), but no worries.

It does seem likely that this is related to the registry, however it is more likely to be a permissions issue than a virus, especially since you are still able to run Malwarebytes normally.

Please do the following to see if it corrects the issue:

Tweaking.com Windows Repair All-in-One

  • Download Tweaking.com Windows Repair from here and install it or if you would prefer, you may instead download and extract the portable version from here
  • Once installed or extracted, launch Repair_Windows.exe
  • Click on the Repairs - Main tab
  • Click on the Open Repairs button
  • Once it displays the list of repairs, click the checkbox next to All Repairs so that everything listed is UNCHECKED
  • Now, click the checkbox next to Reset Registry Permissions so that it is checked
  • Click on the Start Repairs button at the bottom
  • Once it completes, allow it to restart your system

Once that's done, go ahead and try disabling/enabling the context menu scan option in Malwarebytes once more and reboot, and if that still fails, go ahead and run the installer one more time for Malwarebytes to install it over the top of your existing installation, restart your system once it completes, then test to see if the context menu entry is available.

Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks

Sorry 'bout that John name thing, uh... EX  :)

OK. Did the whole bit. Ran tweaking.com and rebooted as prompted.

1. Reinstalled MWB and rebooted OS.

2. Toggled Context Menu ON/OFF/ON..

Still no MWB Context menu.

Attached is a screenshot from my phone  showing options with right-click on MWB 3.51.2522,,,EXE which should bring up MWB scan file option.

As you can see no context menu for MWB.

In Shellview no MWB listed either enabled or disabled with all extension types selected...

OK, let's try this a different way.  Please begin by performing a clean uninstall/reinstall:

  1. Run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced Options on the main page (not Get Started)
  3. Click the Clean button, and allow it to restart your system and then reinstall Malwarebytes again using the installer I asked you to download earlier and see if the context menu entry is now present

If it isn't, then go ahead and try the toggling on/off routine one more time to see if it is corrected.

If all of that still failed, then please post a fresh set of logs so I can take a look:

  1. Run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced Options on the main page (not Get Started)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Thanks

Well now. The clean uninstall apparently solved the problem.

1. Cleaned w/ MWB Support tool. Reinstalled most recent version of 3.51.2522 from server (09-12-2018)

2, Right-click on   downloaded .exe file...and voila. Context Menu MWB present.

Tanx for all the help, EX. Best to Bro John :)

Interesting, well go figure.  That was pretty much my last resort before sending you off to the malware removal forum to have them check your system over (infection causing this being extremely unlikely, but I was pretty much out of options at that point).

I'm glad that it's working now, and I'll be sure to let my brother know that you send your regards :)

If there's anything else we might assist you with please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks

Update:

Btw, with most recent version of 3.51.2522 from server (09-12-2018) installed still getting BSOD when MWB Web Protection toggled to ON.

The whole time I ran the earlier version, with Web Pro. turned OFF for several weeks, never got a BSOD.

Guess MWB  will not support this feature with Vista...

I've turned Web Protection OFF. Not happy about it...

Seems to be connected with Chrome 64 Browser when closing the browser...

Version 49.0.2623.75 m (64-bit) Unable to upgrade to later version of Chrome because Vista no longer supported by Google/Chrome.

Hey EX-

Haven't tried opera or vivaldi browsers, got too much going on to chase this at the moment. But Firefox running contemporaneously does not seem to trigger the BSOD....

Thanks,

Hi dcollins-

Tried to zip file mini091318-01.dmp for some reason 7-zip gives me an error message. "Access denied. 7-zip cannot open file."

Probably permissions. Don't have time to mess with it. Made a copy to work around the issue which is attached.

The file is only 270 KB so I've attached as native .dmp files which are supported below.

This file is the most recent .dmp that was the consequence of the BSOD referenced above with the most recent version of 3.51.2522 from server (09-12-2018) installed

Have no idea why I would be prompted to use wettransfer.com ???

Please advise if this is sufficient for your needs...and the results of your research etc.

Thanks.

dcollins-

c:/windows/memory.dmp (933 MB) is still present with correct archive date of 09-13-2018 of the BSOD.

Here's the rub:

1. Figured out how to zip the file. Zipped file is 211 MB (about 23%)

2. Not clear on how to use wetransfer.com. Only see an email option? It prompts me for an email address to send to. Do I need an email address for you?

3. So...How do I get it to you?

Tnx

OK. Some discrepancy in the file size of MEMORY.ZIP on my computer (211 MB) compared to the file uploaded (206 MB) to wetransfer.com.(?)

Let me know if you have any problems reading the file. The BSOD date in question is 09-13-2018

Here's the wetransfer.com link for download.

Please confirm receipt and that the file is functional for your review.

Tnx,

Thanks for the memory dump. I don't see anything immediately jumping out stating it's Malwarebytes causing the problem, so I'm having our engineers double check. Do you know how quickly this happens when you have web protection enabled? Does it happen all the time? Just trying to understand what's triggering the issue so we can try to reproduce on our side.
