Popups, not secure connection?

Recommended Posts

Seems to run everything in the Microsoft Store (the preinstalled Windows 10 games, despite having opened one ever, are in the Task Manager, seemingly the reason why the C drive is capped and then goes down). When installing something, a popup asks "You need to install an app for this task. Would you like to search one in the Store?" This cannot be closed or moved. And I think I can't manage the startup programs in regedit, as well as I cannot delete processes in Task Manager (Internet Explorer has been running in the background, waiting to be killed). Cortana and Microsoft Store has been using the most network time... Chrome had a "your connection is not private" error a half hour back...

AdwCleaner detects pup.optional.legacy but that's it for the detected files, even checked Avast and didn't find anything.

Funny, I wanted to do this for checkups today but it seems like I have a virus myself .-.

I'll update for any of the Weird ***** that happens:

  • added microsoft edge to the "do not disturb" list in avast, which silences notifications from everything. it does this to games, but to do this with programs is ominous.

Update: I've restarted my computer after running AdwCleaner. The AOL pup is still there. I can end tasks now, but I still can't look at the startup files in regedit.

I was freaking out and read the wrong thing in Task Manager (App History vs. Processes) so the first sentence is unapplicable. Everything else still applies -- or rather applied. It's working fine, aside the C drive goes 100% and goes from a range of 70-100% for awhile on at least login, and that I can't manage the startup files in regedit, though I can view it from Control Panel.

  • 2 weeks later...

I think I was being paranoid before (I think the Store is working fine [but I don't intend to use it often, if at all], I can look at files in regedit fine, Chrome has these "connection is not private" errors rarely, and the C drive being 100% was when I was downloading a game or scanning on Malwarebytes) but it would be nice to have a checkup. I've reuploaded these files in case there were any changes between the two weeks.

I'm not sure if you're seeing this issue or not, but there was a conflict between Malwarebytes and Avast on the Web Protection. Avast has posted an update to their program that others say it fixes.

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=221320.0

ATTENTION: System Restore is disabled

I would highly suggest you enable System Restore and then create a new Restore Point

Avast also crashed it says in the Event Logs

Error: (01/20/2025 02:28:34 PM) (Source: Application Hang) (EventID: 1002) (User: )
Description: The program AvastUI.exe version 18.5.3931.358 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

Process ID: 17d0

Start Time: 01d438c2241e700e

Termination Time: 60000

Application Path: C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\AvastUI.exe

Report Id: a30905f3-c7c5-49f6-a65c-e9e9c4ea11e8

Strange date on that file though.

Not sure what caused the crashed. You might want to consider uninstalling Avast, then reinstall it with the latest version. Then let me know if you're still having any issues or not.

The logs, aside from a couple of program crashes isn't showing anything too bad.
