Windows cannot start Malwarebytes

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

If you haven’t already done so, please run the Malwarebytes Support Tool and then attach the logs in your next reply:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • Once the file is downloaded, open your Downloads folder/location of the downloaded file
  • Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  • Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  • You will be presented with a page stating, "Welcome to the Malwarebytes Support Tool!"
  • Click the Advanced Options link

  • Click the Gather Logs button

  • A progress bar will appear and the program will proceed to gather troubleshooting information from your computer
  • Upon completion, click OK
  • A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  • Please attach the file in your next reply. Before submitting your reply, be sure to enable "Notify me of replies" like so:

Greetings,

To start with it appears that you have both Avira and AVG installed with at least some components active for each.  I would suggest removing one of them so that you have only one antivirus.  It appears that you have most of AVG disabled so that's probably the one you'll want to remove.

Next, I saw a long list of folders for Malwarebytes listed for pending rename operations and I suspect perhaps that the installation got corrupted somehow, perhaps during a recent update/upgrade to a new version.  To fix that the quickest way would likely be to perform a clean install so please follow the instructions below:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced Options on the main page (not Get Started)
  3. Click the Clean button, and allow it to restart your system and then reinstall Malwarebytes, either by allowing the tool to do so when it offers to on restart, or by downloading and installing the latest version from here

Once Malwarebytes is reinstalled, open it and go to Settings>Application and click on the Install Application Updates button and allow it to download and install any new components and then allow it to restart if prompted.  Once Malwarebytes is installed and fully up to date you should see the following version information under Settings>About for both Malwarebytes version as well as Component package version:

I would also recommend strongly that you remove Java if you don't need it for anything as it represents a major security issue as there are many exploits for Java out there even if kept up to date.  To do so you may use the Java uninstall tool located here.

Please let me know how it goes and if the issue is now resolved or not.

I dont have AVG installed anymore I uninstalled that around 6 months ago. I also uninstalled Avira trying to fix this issue with Malwarebytes. That didnt work and i re-installed it before i ran the support tool to get your zip files. 

I have also ran the support tool 3 times to do the clean 3 times before I messaged on this board.

By the way, for anyone who might be curious, it turns out, according to a colleague, that this is being caused by AVG's Fake Website Shield component so if anyone has issues with Malwarebytes not working properly alongside AVG, that is most likely the reason and disabling that component of AVG should resolve it, allowing you to run both in tandem without issue.

If anyone does continue to have problems, then please create your own thread in this forum and we will assist you as soon as we can.
