Malwarebytes won't open - mbcut.dll missing

Recommended Posts

Hi

So today suddenly my malwarebytes tray icon vanished. Fair enough, happened before, no problem. So I go on to start malwarebytes again only to be greeted by an error about mbcut.dll not being found and that reinstalling the program may fix this. I'm dutch and so is my system and program settings so I unfortunately don't know what the full error would have been in English nor did I think to grab a screenshot - I started panicking at this point. I also checked task manager and no malwarebytes programs were running.

I didn't really want to uninstall because quite frankly 1. I am *horrible* with computers and am far too afraid to mess something up and 2. I'm worried what that will do with the premium key I bought and should still be valid for another year at least?

So I opted to restart my computer in an attempt to fix the problem. Starting my PC again, the tray icon did appear once again, and right clicking it does say I am fully protected. Task manager also tells me malwarebytes is running, at least the tray icon. I am however unable to start the program. This time there is no error - My computer simply tries to load it (the circle appears at my cursor) but then nothing. I ran a scan with Windows Defender and that found nothing.

Given I'm being told I'm protected should I still be worried? Could this just wave over and fix itself tomorrow like previous issues?

If I do have to do anything please bear in mind my knowledge of computers is *zero* give or take.

Greetings,

Several users appear to be impacted by this issue.  My best guess is that there was a problem with the recently released update for Malwarebytes that caused this to happen on some systems, including yours.  Hopefully this will fix it but please let us know if it does not.

First, please download and install the latest version of Malwarebytes from here.  There is no need to remove your existing version, just install it over the top of your existing installation.

Once that is done, open Malwarebytes and go to Settings>Application and click on the Install Application Updates button.  This will have Malwarebytes download any available program version updates just to make sure that you are fully up to date.

Once that's finished, go to Settings>About and verify that your copy of Malwarebytes shows the following version information:

Please let us know how it goes and if the problem you had persists.

Thanks
