Avast keeps adding add-ons and software that is potentially unwanted, which could result in computers being broken, they are:

  • Google Toolbar

  • Driver Updater

  • Cleanup Premium, which also modifies the registry
  • image.png.7fc8c96c552fd05f89d78727bf485aa3.png
  • Constant popups
  • image.jpeg.ba871c6f4e4fd38db44f74ba3c0e4c90.jpeg

Microsoft explicitly stated that no registry editing should be done by a program https://support.microsoft.com/en-nz/help/2563254/microsoft-support-policy-for-the-use-of-registry-cleaning-utilities

If Malwarebytes can block Driver Updaters, such as these (which are the same variant), why is Avast an exception?

Most programs that advertise themselves as driver updaters and registry cleaners that are free, yet Malwarebytes blocks them too.

Free Avast isn't limited to all this junk either.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

While we hate driver/registry optimizers and crapware bundlers just as much as anybody else, and are glad that Microsoft finally caught up to our aggressive stance against them, one important distinction is that in this case Avast Free is not preventing you from updating drivers without paying, and it is not using outdated drivers as scare tactics to dupe users into purchasing. Also, the bundled software is Google Toolbar and not some other scammy toolbar (although many people would argue that ALL toolbars are crapware).

We have not shied away from detecting competitors who crossed the line in the past in terms of scare tactics (e.g. PC Pitstop PCMatic), and we will keep an eye on the tactics of this an other optimizers to see if they cross the line in the future.
