Persistent Malware that keeps reappearing.

Recommended Posts

There is a persistent piece of malware on my Windows 8.1 PC, SearchAwesome, that tries to contact mansactechnology.com, which, ofcourse, gets blocked by Malwarebytes SearchAwesome refuses to be uninstalled, everytime I go into the Control Panel and click the button,  Malwarebytes blocks a temp file that it identifies as a malware. Even if i disable Malwarebytes' live malware protection, the installation wizard never comes up.

Another one, each time I open Opera, Malwarebytes blocks outgoing connections to api.testrequest.info, this also never seems to go away.

I've run both Malwarebytes and Adwcleaner, none seem to get rid of these two malwares.

First, if you haven't done so, please run a Threat Scan with the latest version of Malwarebytes. This may resolve your malware infection issue without the need for additional support. Click "Reveal Hidden Contents" below for details:

Next, if you're still experiencing issues after running Malwarebytes, then technical logs will be required to assist you. Click "Reveal Hidden Contents" below and follow the instructions to run the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool:

Spoiler

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make a recovery difficult.

Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool here and save it to your desktop. Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  1. Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
  2. Press the Scan button.

  3. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach or copy and paste it to your reply.
  4. The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've run it before it may not and you may need to select it manually.

Please Note the Following:

  • One of our expert helpers will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Refrain from making any further changes to your computer (such as Install/Uninstall programs, using special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.
  • Do not 'bump' or add a reply to your topic once it is started. Topics which appear to have replies are considered to have a helper assisting them and may be overlooked, resulting in a longer waiting period for help
  • If you're using Peer 2 Peer software such as uTorrent or similar, please completely disable it from running while being assisted here.

Hi nasdaq :)

I think you might not have read my original text well, so here I attach a screenshot that shows what happens if I click the uninstallation button: Malwarebytes blocks the program triggered. Even if I disable MBAM's Real Time Malware Protection, The uninstallation wizard never comes up.

I've also run the Fixlist through FRST and have attached the logfiles here.

Hi,

The program was removed by Malwarebytes and has been Quarantined.

The only thing left is the Program List in the Registry.

To remove it execute the instructions on this Microsoft page.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/247501/how-to-manually-remove-programs-from-the-add-remove-programs-list

p.s.

Unless you are familiar with modifying the Registry I suggest you Export the registry key.

Items 3 and 4 on the page.

If at any time you need help before proceeding please ask.

Um I think then the only problem would be the existence of a blocked temp file, recognised as a malware, every time I click on the uninstall button?

I will update you on the alerts in a while to make sure they don't come back but that temp file still does replicate itself, which to me indicates that the malware is somehow alive in some form :(.

Hey I just discovered, the uninstall String associated with SearchAwesome does exist, viz. C:\Windows\NTdjYjQ0YW.exe . What do you think about this? If I run this file, Malwarebytes blocks the temp file it creates. But, interestingly, scanning this file with Malwarebytes does not yield a positive. I'm gonna delete this file and then clean the registry key then.

Hi

Good catch.

Delete both files in bold.

2018-06-08 18:17 - 2018-06-08 18:17 - 001878528 _____ C:\Windows\NTdjYjQ0YW.exe
2018-06-08 18:17 - 2018-06-08 18:17 - 000101827 _____ C:\Windows\uninstaller.dat

You may have to boot to Safe Mode to delete them.

Restart the computer normally.

Any remaining issues.
