Howdy,

So it looks like I’m infected with some adware/malvertising.

Pretty sure it was from a trainer on megagames - this'd be the first time it'd ever come from there though, in years of using that site.

Symptoms:

  • Every 15-30mins, I get a browser opened to one of a few different ad sites – for the majority of them, Malwarebytes picks it up with a “Website blocked due to malvertising” notification.
  • If I try to browse/search anything with “adw” or “farbar” in it, the malware kills the process for that app – this means it affects all browsers (tested with Chrome, Edge, and Opera), and even things like opening the log for adwcleaner (since notepad shows the file name in its titlebar, the malware picks this up and kills the notepad.exe process), and trying to run Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.

Things done so far:

  • Updated/ran latest Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it does detect the malvertising going out to go.oclasrv.com (the error/warning in browser), but doesn’t seem to be able to fix it.
  • I managed to get AdwCleaner installed by downloading it on another pc and copying it over (because I couldn’t open a webpage that had "adw" in the title or url as the malware kills the process), ran it, cleaned, rebooted, and it still shows as threat detected – so AdwCleaner can’t seem to be able to fix it - screenshot attached.
  • I managed to get the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool on to the machine using the same method I did with AdwCleaner, and at first I couldn’t run it, as the malware would kill the process as it loaded. I noticed there were two blank processes running – one of them taking up almost 60% of CPU performance(!). I ended both processes, and was able to run Farbar – logs attached.
  • Since this happened, I’ve also installed/run Zemana Antimalware (doesn’t detect the threat), and Gridinsoft Antimalware (also doesn’t detect the threat).

Attached:

  • FRST log, Addition log, AdwCleaner logs, images of the blank processes, and AdwCleaner’s report.

Thanks in advance for any help. <3

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malware Removal for Windows Help forum. Being infected is not fun and can be very frustrating to resolve, but don't worry because we have a team of experts here help you!!

Note: Please be patient. When the site is busy it can take up to 48 hours before a malware removal helper can assist you. If no one has replied to your new topic after 48 hours please contact a Moderator or Administrator to let them know.

First, if you haven't done so, please run a Threat Scan with the latest version of Malwarebytes. This may resolve your malware infection issue without the need for additional support. Click "Reveal Hidden Contents" below for details:

Spoiler

Malwarebytes can detect and remove most malware with no further actions required for free.

If you do not have Malwarebytes, please download it here and install. Be sure to post back the log as shown below.

  1. Open Malwarebytes for Windows
  2. To the left, click Scan > Scan Types.

  4. Click Start Scan

Next, if you're still experiencing issues after running Malwarebytes, then technical logs will be required to assist you. Click "Reveal Hidden Contents" below and follow the instructions to run the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool:

Spoiler

Don't use any temporary file cleaners unless requested - this can cause data loss and make a recovery difficult.

Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool here and save it to your desktop. Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  1. Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
  2. Press the Scan button.

  3. It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  4. The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've run it before it may not and you may need to select it manually.

Finally, attach the Malwarebytes Threat Scan, FRST.txt and Additional.txt logs to your reply. Before submitting your reply, be sure to enable "Notify me of replies" like so: notify me.jpeg

Please Note the Following:

  • One of our expert helpers will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Refrain from making any further changes to your computer (such as Install/Uninstall programs, using special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.
  • Do not 'bump' or add a reply to your topic once it is started. Topics which appear to have replies are considered to have a helper assisting them and may be overlooked, resulting in a longer waiting period for help
  • If you're using Peer 2 Peer software such as uTorrent or similar, please completely disable it from running while being assisted here.

Hey @TwinHeadedEagle,

Sure, no problem! I ran both AntiMalware and AdwCleaner again:

  • AntiMalware is detecting no threats on scan (2018-06-05 14_39_46-MBAM attached), but is picking up when the malware tries to browse to a url (2018-06-05 14_40_10-MBAM report screenshot attached).
  • Adw Cleaner is detecting the threat (2018-06-05 14_41_33-MBADWC attached), but when I click clean & repair, and select the repair and reboot option, after rebooting it still shows the threat as detected and not removed (2018-06-05 14_44_13-MBADWC_CleanAndReboot_NotClean attached).

Yes, there are some malware related entries in your logs. MalwareBytes is getting updated to mitigate it starting from its next database update. Now we are going to remove it manually :)

FRST.gif Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

icon_exclaim.gif This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine. icon_exclaim.gif
icon_exclaim.gif Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable. icon_exclaim.gif

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on FRST.gif icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finishes FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

Morning,

No more instances of browser opening in the last 20hrs~ and I can search/run apps with things like adw and farbar in the title - so that's all fixed! ?

AdwCleaner does still detect a threat (screenshot attached), and clean+restart doesn't fix the detection of the threat, but as there's no symptoms of it doing anything malicious I guess that's ok?
