Windows won't start

I posted in the general malwarebytes anti-malware forum but I'm not sure what the problem is. When I start my computer I'm given these choices:

safe mode

safe mode with networking

safe mode with command prompt

last known good configuration

start windows normally

Whatever I pick I get a blue screen saying a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. How do I get into windows?

Hi,

Did this happen suddenly and unexpected?

It would be helpful if you could write the error code of the problem detected.

Maybe there is a problem with a windows file, or with installed malware.

You have some options such as

1)Scanning for malware with a live CD

2)Booting with windows cd and repair installation

I think you need to give a bit more information before any of the experts here will be able to help you. Because, at the moment, there is no way of telling what is actually causing the problem.

What was actually happening to your computer before you had this problem? Did you get screens on your desktop saying something like 'Antispy Protector 2009' or 'Home Antivirus 2010' or something similar? Did you manage to remove anything with any anti-virus or anti-malware programs before this problem occurred? If you did, what did your anti-virus or anti-malware program say about it? Do you have your original Windows installation disk so that you can attempt a repair installation if the experts advise it?

I was online and got a virus or something...it closed down my IE. I tried to run a scan with malwarebytes but it wouldn't open. Then I tried to restart in safe mode but that's when I got the screen with my options of safe mode, etc. On the blue screen there is a line that says technical information:

stop: 0x0000007B (0xf789E528, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I do have the original windows installation disk. Am I better off just re-installing?

The error code indicates an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE .

You may have to deal with a boot sector virus.

You can try to avoid a windows re-install by scanning your pc with a bootable cd:

Also you can use a linux live cd to backup any useful files.

I ran avira and had 14 alerts. I can't copy the log because I still can't get into windows on that computer. The first couple alerts were:

/media/Devices/sda2/lcbckjms.exe

/media/Devices/sda2/Documents and Settings/DavidN/Local Settings/Tempory Internet Files/18.tmp

All the other alerts started with /media/Devices/sda2 and none could be removed.

All I really want is to be able to use my computer again and if that means re-installing windows and losing anything I have on my computer I can deal with that.

You have the following options:

1)boot with the windows cd, and when the screen 'Welcome to setup appears' press F10 or R to start recovery console.

Then enter this command, to check your disk for errors and fix them. chkdsk drive /p

where drive is c:

Then enter this command to fix mbr. fixmbr

Write 'exit' to quit from recovery console and try to boot into safemode first.

2)If the above did not work, you can repair windows installation. With this option, your programs and files will remain, but the infection will remain also. You will be able to load windows, though.

boot with your windows cd, and at the 'welcome to setup', press 'Enter'. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

3)Your last option is to Re-install windows. Quick format the system partition and setup windows. You will lose your files.

I tried option 1 and got into the recovery console but then my computer locks up and I can't type anything or do anything. Option 2 when I get to "welcome to setup" it locks up also and I can't do anything. How do I re-install windows? I know I'll lose all my files but it will get rid of the problem too, won't it?
