MBAM tray not loading on startup

Recommended Posts

I installed the latest build of Malwarebytes (trial version) on a client's Windows 10 machine (clean installation of latest 1709 build), and the Malwarebyes Tray Application doesn't want to load on startup.

Curiously, it won't load on startup if I've done a "Shutdown", but it will load fine if I do a "Restart". I suspect it may have something to do with Win 10's Hybrid Shutdown feature.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

(btw, I was able to sidestep this problem by adding an mbamtray.exe shortcut to the Windows "Startup" folder, but I'd rather have it working the right way, if possible).

    2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer

I believe this is being caused due to a compatibility issue with Fast Startup in Windows 10.  Please try disabling that setting; instructions on how to do so may be found here.

Also, in order to ensure that the Developers have all of the data they need to hopefully fix this in a future release please do the following:

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced Options on the main page (not Get Started)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

Please let me know if the issue is fixed or not and if there are any other problems.

Yes, if I disable Fast Startup (aka Hybrid Shutdown), then it loads correctly. So it's definitely an issue of incompatibility w/ Fast Startup feature. Hopefully it will be fixed in a future Malwarebytes release.

I'm kinda surprised that more people aren't reporting this problem. Or perhaps it's a problem with the way that this particular machine implements Fast Startup.

I have exactly this problem also. I almost made my own thread about it before seeing this.

I don't know if turning off fast start up is something I want to do. I kind of like it when my pc is fast at doing things... :P I'd much prefer you fixed the problem with malwarebytes.

It's not a major issue, but it's annoying. The actual live protection etc is still active even though it's not in the system tray?

I'd suggesting trying it without Fast Startup just to see how much slower it is.  If you've got an SSD you might be surprised at how quickly the system starts, even with Fast Startup disabled.
