The only computer I have is an HP 17z laptop, windows 10. For my antivirus I use Windows Defender. I am completing my free trial of Malwarebytes and I would like to get the premium, but I have a question. Malwarebytes is able to covrer 3 devices.  I have no cell phone presently, but I do have a 1½ year old 4K ultra tv.  The cable company is Frontier Vantage.  Can I use Malwarebytes somehow to protect my TV?

If you haven't done so already, please run these two tools and then attach the logs in your next reply:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
    1. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
    2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
    3. Press the "Scan" button
    4. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
      • Leave the log files in the current location, they will be automatically collected by mb-check once you complete the next set of instructions
  • MB-Check
    1. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
    2. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, press "Enter" to accept the EULA then click "OK"
    3. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
      • This file will include the FRST logs generated from the previous set of instructions
      • Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Malwarebytes is designed for Windows or Mac so because the TV does not run either of these systems, it will not be possible to install Malwarebytes on the TV.

Also--Because it runs a custom OS, it is generally not impacted by traditional infections since theyre designed to executive on a Windows/Mac (depending on infection).

Just FYI, there are actually some threats that attack IoT (Internet of Things) devices like smart TVs and other household electronics which connect to the web, so having some kind of protection for them wouldn't hurt.  Generally such protection is provided through the router used for connecting your devices to the internet.  Some routers have some kind of anti-malware capabilities built in, but at minimum should at least provide firewall capabilities which will at least help to some degree to keep hackers out of your devices.  As IoT devices become more common in households, the bad guys will begin to target them with greater frequency and this is a gap in the protection offered by most security tools and products, including Malwarebytes at the moment.  I also believe that eventually these devices will either start to include security capabilities and software or that router and modem manufacturers will start providing security solutions to protect these types of devices better.

That said, there are things you can do to help secure your devices without using any third party software including only using it for the services specifically included with the device/offered by your device's provider (for example, if it comes with Netflix and/or Amazon video streaming capabilities built in) and not doing normal web browsing on the device so that you avoid most of the risk with regards to possible exploits etc. which might be targeting the device/its browser.  While it is possible that Amazon, Netflix and other streaming service providers could get hacked and have exploits embedded in their sites, it is far less likely than with other sites which display advertisements from third parties (such as Google AdSense and Microsoft adCenter among others).  Instead, perform these tasks on your better secured devices such as your laptop or smartphone (assuming you have Malwarebytes installed on your smartphone of course) so that you are better shielded against the possible presence of malicious exploits in third party advertisements (known as malvertisements).

For more info in the risks and existing measures you can take to secure your IoT devices like your TV, take a look at these articles written by Malwarebytes on the subject:
