Extremely Nasty Malware keeps spawning RiskWare.BitCoinMiner

PC got infected with an extremely hard to remove malware. It keeps creating a fake conhost.exe file in Windows/SysWOW64, as well as fake Adobe folders in AppData/Local. No rootkit/AV/Anti Malware program has been able to detect it.

It starts up shortly after the PC boots, and its presence is known as soon as MalwareBytes blocks the RiskWare.BitCoinMiner process while doing live scans. The source of this process still cannot be found/cleaned, only the BitCoinMiner process it starts up every hour or so. It will close a majority of programs that run with cmd prompt, will close the browser when trying to search for specific keywords, and tries to blue screen if the user attempts to close or restart the PC.

It doesn't seem to run in safe mode.

After the malware "starts", FRST keeps getting closed whenever I try to launch it. Should I try to get the logs as soon as my PC boots (before the malware has a chance to start up), or should I get the logs in safe mode? Any help is appreciated!

Can you please try to run FRST in Safe Mode and post back the logs.

 

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Actually doesn't show that it is infected like that. You do have too much security software and it may be conflicting with each other and causing an issue.

Let's have you uninstall the 2 antivirus programs for now.

Please download and run the McAfee antivirus removal tool:  http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Uninstall Avast from the control panel. Then run their removal tool:  http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Then uninstall ALL versions of Java from the Control Panel

You also have Kaspersky Antivirus Scanner, but it may be hidden from you in the Control Panel. See if there is a link to remove it from the Start Menu

Then once all of the above has been removed and a couple reboots, please run the following.

 

 

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes 3 then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes 3 installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the Export Summary button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find, and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know on your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

 

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03

  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

The Malwarebytes log shows it did find something, but says you did not tell it to remove it.

RiskWare.BitCoinMiner, C:\USERS\ASAD\APPDATA\LOCAL\TEAMVIEWER\000001N.ZIP, No Action By User, [915], [467508],1.0.4730

Please run Malwarebytes again and make sure you choose to remove what it finds.

Yeah I quarantined + removed it after; that's the file that gets spawned every hour or so and is the only one that gets detected by Malwarebytes
(I ran FRST after removing the file MWB found and restarted)

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

Great, okay. Please reboot the computer one more time.

Then run Malwarebytes, check for updates and run a new threat scan. This time the log should hopefully be clean

Seems it detected the miner file again, however it may have spawned again during the fixing process. I know there are other files and settings that are harmful that I still have. For example, in Windows/SysWOW64, there is a fake conhost64.exe file that comes up as a trojan on virustotal.com, but clean to MalwareBytes. Would there be any way to check if any settings or remnant files exist?

As of now, I don't see anything obviously wrong anymore. Thank you so much for the help, I appreciate it!

Are there any programs that you recommend I run to potentially find/clean up any remnants that may not be obvious?

At this time there are no more signs of an infection on your system.
However if you are still seeing any signs of an infection please let me know.

Let's go ahead and remove the tools and logs we've used during this process.

Most of the tools used are potentially dangerous to use unsupervised or if ran at the wrong time.
They are often updated daily so if you went to use them again in the future they would be outdated anyways.

The following procedures will implement some cleanup procedures to remove these tools.

  • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is checked.
  • Click the Run button.
  • Reboot


If there are any other leftover Folders, Files, Logs then you can delete them on your own.
Any other programs or logs that are still remaining, you can manually delete. (right click.....Delete)
IE: C:\FRST folder, FRST -OlderVersion folder, MBAR folder, etc....AdwCleaner > just run the program and click uninstall.

As Java seems to get exploited on a regular basis I advise not using Java if possible but to at least disable java in your web browsers

A lot of reading here but if you take the time to read a bit of it you'll see why/how infections and general damage are so easily inflicted on the computer. There is also advice on how to prevent it and keep the system working well. Don't forget about good, solid backups of your data to an external drive that is not connected except when backing up your data. If you leave a backup drive connected and you do get infected it can easily damage, encrypt, delete, or corrupt your backups as well and then you'd lose all data.
Nothing is 100% bulletproof but with a little bit of education, you can certainly swing things in your favor.


If you're not currently using Malwarebytes Premium then you may want to consider purchasing the product which can also help greatly reduce the risk of a future infection.

Any chance you can zip the frst quarantine folder and attach it here? Would like to see what we missed.

its located in the root of the c drive.
