PSW.Agent.ABTH and SHeur2.AAYP

Recommended Posts

I removed the PSW.Agent.ABTH and SHeur2.AAYP with AVG, but am still getting an annoying pop up message on several tasks that says "This application has failed to start because msqapuxd.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Most applications will continue to load after clicking the OK box; however, my MS Money 2004 will not start after clicking OK. It will show up in the task manager until I click OK, then it disappears.

Help is most greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

Please use the Internet Explorer browser and click here to use the F-Secure Online Scanner.

  • Click Start Scanning.
  • You should get a notification bar (on top) to install the ActiveX control.
  • Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
  • Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
  • In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here.
  • Click the Full System Scan button.
  • It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
  • The main scan will start.
  • Once the scan has finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
  • It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
  • The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
  • Then click the Show report button and Copy/Paste what is present under results in your next reply.

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Hi,

Download this Registry Search by Bobbi Flekman, save it, and extract regsearch.exe to the Desktop. You will use it in a moment.

Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start it. In the top window, enter msqapuxd.dll as the search string on the first line. Make sure all the option boxes are checked, and click "Ok". Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file will be saved to the Desktop as well as RegSearch.txt). Post this text in your next reply.

After that, navigate to Start --> Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall the following programs (if present):

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02

Adobe Reader 7.0.9

Restart your computer.

Get the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Same problem still persists. It wouldn't be soooo bad, except I can't use iTunes or MS Money at all. : (

I went ahead and did a new RegSearch - results are below. Looking forward to your next idea. Thanks.

Before I unsintall/re-install iTunes, I want to make sure that you understand about my error messages.

(See image example).

XXXX.exe - Unable to Locate Component

This application has failed to start because msqapuxd.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

3875868353_51f7f896ac.jpg

This error message happens from before the XP 'Welcome Screen' comes up, while the startup items are loading, and whenever I start a program.

Usually, after clicking OK, the program will still startup.... except for (so far that I know of) iTunes and MS Money 2004.

I installed an older version of Quicken to use temporarily today, and even when I run that program I get the error message. (It will still run after I click OK).

MalwareBytes did not detect any infection. AVG did not detect any infection. (Ran both yesterday)

But, somewhere in the computer, many (I think all) of the programs are still instructed to search for and use this phantom dll.

I'm not quite sure why this is still happening, because I have noticed at least another on this forum has been able to correct their similar problem. Are there any other scans I can do to help you identify the source of my problem?

Again, thanks for your time in helping.

But, somewhere in the computer, many (I think all) of the programs are still instructed to search for and use this phantom dll.
That's what I was thinking, which is why we ran the Registry search. It's loading from somewhere, or that data has been appended to the files themselves.

Let's dig a little deeper.

Please run a GMER Rootkit scan:

Download GMER's application from here:

http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe

Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.

This will copy the results to your clipboard.

Paste the results in your next reply.

Warning ! Please, do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.

No joy. :)

I did un-install/re-install iTunes.

I can watch in the Task Manager as I start the program - it shows up in the list (along with the error message as stated previously).

After I click OK on the error message, the program disappears from the list.

The same thing also happens with (that I know of so far):

MS Money 2004

PAF 5 (a genealogy program)

Any ideas?

Thanks.

After I click OK on the error message, the program disappears from the list.

What exactly shows up in the list? iTunes? Or msqapuxd?

Try this for me please:

Please reboot to Safe Mode (tap the F8 key just before Windows starts to load and select the Safe Mode option from the menu).

See if the error message pops up in Safe Mode (run iTunes, run MS Money, etc.).

Hi,

Sorry - I should have been more descriptive with the issue.

When I start iTunes (or MS Money, PAF 5, MS Paint) and also watch in the Task Manager - (This happens whether I am watching in the Task Manager or not)

Error message appears and iTunes shows up on the Task Manager list.

3887502994_62f3249cae.jpg

After I click OK, iTunes does not continue starting (most other programs do continue to start) and it disappears from the Task Manager List.

As you suggested, I tried starting in SAFE mode. Error messages persist from before windows logs on and still unable to start iTunes or MS Money. Same as described above.

Any thoughts?

Thank you.

No joy.

I get the following error message:

iTunes.exe - Bad Image

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\msqapuxd.dll is not a vailid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

(After this, I deleted the blank msqapuxd.dll file from the system32 folder)

Had a smiliar problem and Combofix seemed to have helped. I'm wondering why Combofix did not seem to help in my case and also wondering if we should try running it again?

Thanks much.
