BSOD, new dell desktop

Recommended Posts

My computer crashes about once per day and it is a new computer... Only weird thing that I can think of is that I am running a giant TV as a monitor, tbh if that is the issue, I can just get reasonable monitors instead.

New Dell xPS 8920 Desktop (link to full description idk if helpfull)

swapped default graphics for EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC

As I am new to this forum I am not sure how to tag propperly, so please let me know if I need to learn and update the Tagging for this post to be seen by the right people.

TYVM in advanced for your help

Your UEFI/BIOS (version 1.0.4) dates from 2017.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  This is just in case there has been a more recent update.
FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and that outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).

Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating.  NOTE:  Lot's of Windows Update failures in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report.

Many errors (WER section again) with Tactical Monsters.exe  Probably not associated with BSOD's - but would suggest making sure it's compatible w/W10 and then uninstall it and replace it with a freshly downloaded copy.

I'd start by running Driver Verifier according to these instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/verifier.html
After that's done (let it generate a couple of crashes), then start with these free hardware diagnostics:Please run these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
Please run ALL of the tests and let us know the results.
FYI - These are the tests and what we usually see for the reports:

1 - Antivirus/antimalware scans:  In short, if there are Trojans or other serious malware - start over in the Am I Infected forums

2 - Memory diagnostics:  Run MemTest86+ for at least 3 passes.  If booting from UEFI, run MemTest86 instead.  Let us know if there were any errors reported
3 - Hard Drive diagnostics:  Don't sweat the details here.  In short, run the Seagate Seatools Long/Extended test from a bootable disk.  If unable to run it from a bootable disk (UEFI and some others), then run the Seagate Seatools for Windows from within Windows.  There are no diagnostics for SSD's, just run the Crystal Mark tests and let us know if there were any failures
4 - Furmark:  run the test until the temperature stabilizes.  Don't let it get much over 90ºC.  Let us know the temp it stabilizes at and if there were any problems running the test (other than slowness).
5 - Prime95:  run the Blend test for 24 hours (this may not be possible, but run it as long as you can.  Look for errors in the output, or for problems running the test (freezes/crashes)
6 - Video 2 (other video tests):  there's several tests here.  Run all of them.  I'm especially interested in the Video Memory Test.  Let us know the results of the test(s)
  - A - simtek.org memtest
  - B - Video memory stress test
  - C - Artifact Locator
  - D - OCCT - 4 built in tests for CPU, GPU, PSU
  - E - Video Memory Stress Test
7 - CPU tests:  run at least one test on your CPU and let us know the result.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am still working through stuff, but this is what I have so far:

-updated bios from 1.0.4 to version 1.0.15 (latest)

-Searched for windows updates and found one, but it failed to install (x3) error was (0X800f081f)

-Uninstalled TacticalMonsters.exe (dont need it)

-Tried to run Driver Verifier (set everything up as specified), but my system would not make it past boot without BSOD and so I had to do a system restore.

-Downloaded and ran memtest86 (results are attached) *it failed and aborted prematurely on the first run through due to "too many errors"*

I am working on setting up ubcd on a usb drive (but am still zeroing it from memtest because i only have a 64gb drive lol)

*I will continue working through the list of hardware diagnostics

As the system failed MemTest, now it's time to test each stick individually in slot 1 (you pick which is slot 1)
Then, take one of the sticks that passed in Slot 1 and test it in all of the other slots (to test and see if a slot is bad)
Let us know the results (but the bad sticks will most likely have to be replaced).

ZIp up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory
If you can't zip it there, copy the contents to your Desktop and zip it up there - then upload it with your next post.

Which update failed to install?

Try both Driver Verifier and the Windows Update once you've figured out (and removed) the bad RAM stick(s).

--continued

-ran crystal mark (no failures, said all was good)
-ran furmark (15 minutes) stabilized at 66 deg C.
-Attempted to run windows safety scanner, (full scan) got about half way through and then BSOD (Kernel_Security_Check_Failure).  There were not infected files seen prior to the crash.  I can run again if nec.
-Ran prime95 for an hour, will run overnight tonight when I finish work. (i did not see any errors and no crashes occured)
-Ran video memmory test and it failed log is attached.

BSODs have been happening a lot today (I think that is the point of a lot of this) here are the 3 stop codes that i have seen:
-MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
-QUOTA_UNDERFLOW
-KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE

Found the bad memory stick and pulled it (i had 64, but can run on 48 just fine for now). So i just left it out and have a replacement on order.  I ran a full memtest on the 3 and had 4 passes with no errors.

Then I tried driver verifier again and again got bluescreen before load (but it seemed later this time, not sure if possible or true).  The error code was DRIVER_IRQL_LESS_OR_EQUAL.  I had to do a system restore again.

I tried windows update again and got the same failed install, here is the message: 2018-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4089848) - Error 0x800f081f

One of the memory dumps isn't complete.

The complete one could either be hardware related, or networking related.
Please turn off Driver Verifier for now.  To do this, open up verifier.exe and select "Delete existing settings", then click on the "Finish" button in the lower right corner of the Window.  Reboot for changes to take effect.
Continue with the hardware diagnostics.  Rerun malware detection, Prime95, and video memory tests (and complete the rest of the tests).  No need to rerun MemTest

As for the networking, download a fresh copy of the latest, W10 compatible wired networking driver for your system from the Dell support website.
Then....
- uninstall the current wired networking software through appwiz.cpl (or Settings...Apps & Features)
- reboot
- install the freshly downloaded software for the wired networking driver

Then monitor for further BSOD's
