Seeking Help with potential rootkit, trojan probs

Recommended Posts

good evening

I'm hoping to tap into some expertise within the forums. Ive got an issue with our samsung series 7 laptop taking 8-10 mins to boot up fully. this includes a couple of lengthy periods of just black screen (no curser activity)

I've run Malwarebytes in both normal & safe modes as well as a couple of other spyware/malware progs. I'm also running AVAST free version. none of these have shown up anything serious.

I've reduced some of the programs that are opening at startup & I've done a repair/instal of Windows 10 (NOT the full clean re- instal which wipes out all apps & programs & data).

I've been able to claw back a couple of minutes acording to Bootracer.

I'm currently running Win 10 Pro 64 build 16299.rs3_release 170928-1534 (I think this is the latest update?)

Other details

Samsung series 7 chronos (not an SSD), Intel core i5 3210M chip, 8 Gb ram (I realise the M chips are sluggish but the lappy was never this bad!)

Are there a couple of other programs eg FARBAR, HIJACKthis etc that I can run to try & root out any potential deeper problems- before I head down the track of an SSD & full re-install?

Any advice much appreciated as becoming frustrated.  many thanks in advance.

Good morning Kevin

please find attached text files after running MWB & FARBAR. have noted a couple of "wierd/unknown" prog/files eg Nox APP player? podstawowe programy? & Vulkan Run time + some samsung specific progs (possible bloatware?).

Are you able to run eye over "startup" progs? as they seem to take the considerable time & wondering whether are are necessary?

looking forward to your reply

regards & many thanks in advance

Gordon

Thanks for those logs gebarb,

Continue...

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into. "Do not open that file when running FRST fix"
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Open FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes onto your Desktop.

Or from this Mirror

  • Right-click on AdwCleaner.exe and select user posted imageRun as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Accept the EULA (I accept), then click on Scan
  • Let the scan complete. Once it's done, make sure that every item listed in the different tabs is checked and click on the Clean button. This will kill all the active processes
  • Once the cleaning process is complete, AdwCleaner will ask to restart your computer, do it
  • After the restart, a log will open when logging in. Please copy/paste the content of that log in your next reply

Next,

Download Sophos Free Virus Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.

If your security alerts to this scan either accept the alert or turn off your security to allow Sophos to run and complete.....

Please Do Not use your PC whilst the scan is in progress.... This scan is very thorough so may take several hours...

  • Double click the icon and select Run
  • Click Next
  • Select I accept the terms in this license agreement, then click Next twice
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish to launch the program
  • Once the virus database has been updated click Start Scanning
  • If any threats are found click Details, then View log file... (bottom left hand corner)
  • Copy and paste the results in your reply
  • Close the Notepad document, close the Threat Details screen, then click Start cleanup
  • Click Exit to close the program
  • If no threats were found please confirm that result....

The Virus Removal Tool scans the following areas of your computer:
  • Memory, including system memory on 32-bit (x86) versions of Windows
  • The Windows registry
  • All local hard drives, fixed and removable
  • Mapped network drives are not scanned.

Note: If threats are found in the computer memory, the scan stops. This is because further scanning could enable the threat to spread. You will be asked to click Start Cleanup to remove the threats before continuing the scan.

Next,

podstawowe programy - Is Polish for Basic Programs, part of Windows Live.

Nox APP Player - Is Android Emulator - https://filehippo.com/download_nox-app-player/

Vulkan Run time - Is related to your Graphics card, it may have came preinstalled or was installed with last driver update. It's not malware/infection and can be left alone.

For your bloatware, have a read here: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/free-crapware-removal-software

Post the produced logs..

Thank you,

Kevin

Hello Gordon,

It would seem that malware/infection is not contributing to your issue, lets run a clean boot and see what happens in that mode...

Set windows up for "Clean Boot" mode, full instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/929135

Basically all none MS services are disabled, see how your system runs in that mode. Obviously 3rd party services that affect security or internet connection can be left active.

If clean boot makes your system faster and more responsive it is now a process of elimination to find which non MS service(s) was affecting your system...

Go through the process again, this time with all MS services hidden again enable the top half of non MS services, re-boot and see how your system responds, if still ok the top half can be left enabled.

Repeat again, enable so many of the bottom half then re-boot. Continue until you locate the problem service(s). A process of elimination, a bit long winded but worth the effort. Let me know the outcome...

Thank you,

Kevin
