Malwarebytes is taking long for a threat scan

Recommended Posts

My Malwarebytes did a Threat scan, but that was 5 days ago, and it is still on Pre-Scan Operations, and it is now been over 140 hours! I do not know what is going on, but Malwarebytes did this scan on its own.

I have restarted my computer, but it still does this scan.

Please help! I dont know what is going on. Do I just wait or what is the issue?

If you haven't done so already, please run these two tools and then attach the logs in your next reply:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
    1. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
    2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
    3. Press the "Scan" button
    4. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
      • Leave the log files in the current location, they will be automatically collected by mb-check once you complete the next set of instructions
  • MB-Check
    1. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
    2. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, press "Enter" to accept the EULA then click "OK"
    3. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
      • This file will include the FRST logs generated from the previous set of instructions
      • Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Greetings,

I'm sorry the software isn't working correctly for you.  It sounds like the scanner is having problems and the reason it keeps running is because of the default scheduled scan.  For now let's try to stop the scanning so that we can focus on troubleshooting the issue.  Please open Malwarebytes and go to Settings>Scan Schedule and click once on the scheduled scan listed there to highlight it then click the Delete button on the bottom right.

Once that's done, go ahead and try to cancel the scan in the Scan tab and if it still won't stop, go ahead and restart your computer once more and this time the scheduled scan shouldn't start so that you don't have it stuck perpetually trying to start scanning your system.

Now, open Malwarebytes again and go to Settings>Application and locate and click on the Install Application Updates button.  If it offers to download/install a new version of Malwarebytes, follow the onscreen prompts to allow it to do so, restarting if prompted to complete the installation process.

After that's done, if a new version was installed, go ahead and try running a scan once more by opening Malwarebytes and clicking on the Scan button at the bottom of the main tab of the UI (called Dashboard).

If the scan still gets stuck or if you already had the latest version (3.4.4) installed, please proceed with providing the logs requested in the above post below where it says technical issues by following those instructions and attaching the resulting ZIP file to your next reply.

Please let us know how it goes and please provide the requested logs if the issue persists.

Thanks
