it does not call home every time browser opens, we only push blacklist DB when there is a update.

watch out for announcement on browser extensions early next week.

But when /how does it stay updated? How does the addon know an update was pushed out?

we are using Firefox and Chrome Web Store to push out the updates, just like all other extensions.

Check you settings, The below is the current default settings, Bet you have some check marks in the highlighted sections.
