Unalbe to keep Malwarebytes active protection

Recommended Posts

I have just went from Windows 7 Pro/64 to Windows 10 Pro 64. Same computer.

My system no longer has Windows 7.

I install Malwarebytes Premium on my Windows 10 system and activate with my life time codes and I'm unable to keep active protect on.

Tried many things.

Sure could use some help.

Hey bear, Kinda nice to see you here instead of the 10 Forums

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop. Tell any program that blocks it to ignore or allow. It IS SAFE. It contains no info that can identify or harm you.
  3. NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  4. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  5. Press the "Scan" button
  6. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  7. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  8. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  9. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  10. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  11. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Thanks for the quick response. I have so few problems, I hope I do this proper.

Note: I use Malwarebytes Premium along with Defender and have not had problems before. Both are run active. No other active security programs are used.

I did not deactivate Malwarebytes from the Windows 7. Could that be a problem?

You currently do not have MB installed according to your logs,  Please download from here and install.

Done that once before and in about a week the problem would came back.

Could you run MB check and post the new zip please. No need to do FRST again.

I also suggest adding Exclusions as mentioned in this FAQ HERE (my list below includes the exe files as well)  And is tailored For Windows Defender;)

Add to MB exclusions the following folders.

C:\Program Files\Windows Defender
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Defender
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender (Hidden folder)

For Win 10 PRO also add these Folders.
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (Hidden folder)

For Defender
Add these to FILE exclusions

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbae64.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\MBAMChameleon.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\MBAMSwissArmy.sys
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mwac.sys
C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\farflt.sys

Add to Process exclusions the following files. (copy and paste works best on these)

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MbamPt.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\assistant.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMWsc.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbamtray.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMService.exe
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\malwarebytes_assistant
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbamwow.exe

Folders
Also the MB folder in Program Files and the one in Program Data (it is hidden by default)

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes
C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes   (Enable hidden files to add this one.)

exclusions

Porthos that sure didn't go well.

Added the things to Defender exclusion and it seemed okay.

Added one thing to the Malwarebytes exclusion and the computer had to go through 3 blue screens and reboots.

I set Defender back to default and removed Malwarebytes.

Ran "sfc /scannow" no problems there.

I going to put Malwarebytes back on my system and see how thing go.

I do believe it's a Malwarebytes problem. I also believe Malwarebytes will get it fixed. Hopefully soon.

I also run RKill just to see if anything was causing the problem. RKill found nothing.

I got to do some more thinking because I'm not sure what else I can do but I'm open for suggestions.

If the problem is a exclusion problem, why would things work as they should for a week or two and then fall apart?

Those are "just in case" exclusions in my opinion to prevent issues When MS makes changes to Defender.

Was it an upgrade install of Windows or a clean install from scratch?

Windows 10 was a clean install with a Microsoft DVD store bought. I'm running version 1709.

Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.16299.192]
(c) 2017 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved

I installed MB again and tried to scan with it. Got another shut down.(freeze on scanning memory)

Started up again and activated again and tried another scan and another shut down. (freeze on scanning files)

(K Mode exception-not-handled.)

(WHEA UnCorrectable Error)

What I had to do is use Malwarebyes Remover and then clean up the mess and reboot a couple of times.

Now I can find Defender exception so I can make sure their is nothing there.

I can't remember how I got there just a few minutes ago.

What a bag of worms from a program that has worked great for many years.

Jack

Most of the drivers came from Asus using the motherboard disk

Video driver came from nVidia

Keyboard and mouse drivers are microsoft.

Yes I'm over clocked but I have tried at default and the same thing happens.

Malwarebytes has always work on my my two computer with overclocking.

I have no idea how a overclock would effect Malwarbytes and nothing else.

Before you ask. No their is no temp problems.

My computers run very cool, clean, quiet and snappy.

The drivers are out of date right after they press the disk in most cases. ;)

Just thought of something... The BSOD happened during a scan? MB is designed to max out the CPU during manual scans for faster scanning. Change the below setting and run a scan.

All drivers were checked for updates after the install. The drivers on the DVD will always get one up and running so one can update drivers if need be.

When I do scans of any kind their is not multi-tasking.

All scans are done by themselves. I do nothing while scans are being done. I never do more than one scan at a time.

I'm don't remember if I deactivated Malwarebytes on the old Windows 7 that was on this same computer; would that cause a problem? My understanding is/was that one license would work on one computer, what ever Operating System was installed. Is that correct?

As long as you deactivate OR use the uninstall tool that does it for you.

By design UNLESS  you change that setting to what I showed you ... MB will use as much CPU power as it can use/hog to finish the scans faster.  It very often pegs it out at 100%.  That is why I asked about the clock and at least change that setting in MB to test. My 5 minute research on the blue screen kept coming up CPU.

I only have one operating system, Windows 10 and no VM.

I still have the ssd with Windows 7 on it. I will look if Malwarbyte is still installed and activated.

I keep Windows 7 around just in case I want to go back.

Their is no way a scan using anything is going to over task my system.

I looked and the only update available was BIOS and I would never take the responsibility on a fourm to suggest one do that.

Off topic... I got a slight heart attack when I looked the cost of your build. :o:o I have not spent that kind of money on a computer for myself in years.

Yes it cost a lot. I took a while to save up enough money.

Here is my other system. Over clocked a bunch and Malwarebytes runs quite well and has for a long time. At a 100% load testing neither system goes over 60C at ambient 20C.
