MS 1/3 UIpdates & MB Compatibility

Recommended Posts

Apologies if Malwarebytes has already issued a statement regarding the CPU security vulnerability announced this week but I couldn't find anything on your website or Twitter page.

Microsoft announced  that their patch is only being released via Windows Update for systems that are running compatible anti-virus products (or no AV product) as the patch can lead to instability for machines running a small number of anti-virus products on the market.

I am running Windows 10 and have not seen a patch come down for my machine via Windows Update so I am assuming Malwarebytes is not confirmed to work with Microsoft's patch. Is that accurate? If so, when do you anticipate being able to confirm with Microsoft that your product works with the MS patch?

An advisory page on your site for this would be helpful...I may have overlooked it.

We are looking for the same information, I have not found anything either.

Will MB please give us some information regarding this issue?

I just checked Symantec's website and they're weirdly silent on the matter as well. My guess is that the AV vendors have been asked to stay mum on the issue until everything gets sorted...

Has anyone manually applied the registry key to install the patch with MB installed?  Any issues?

According to the Sysadmin thread one user simply installed the update with regular MB installed and running.

I have not recieved the updates yet, so I dont know.

I'm running MBAE & MBAM as well as Symantec on my Windows 10 machine. about 20 minutes after manually performing a Live Update in Symantec, Windows update downloaded the patch (KB4056892).

I'm worried though...if Symantec's Live Update edits the registry key as referenced in Microsoft's advisory thereby signalling to Windows Update that it's okay to install the patch, my concern is that my other AV product (Malwarebytes) isn't necessarily compatible with the patch. Symantec tweaked the registry key to install the patch without consideration of Malwarebytes...

I'll reboot and perform a full MB scan of my machine and report back.

Guy947 any luck after reboot and scan?  Did you BSOD or everything seems stable?  I'm a little upset MB hasn't released any information yet on status.

Flash scan and Full scan ran successfully after applying the MS patch and rebooting.

Now I'm trying to troubleshoot why Symantec is giving me issues even after applying all their Live Updates...

MBMC and Anti-Malware 1.80 does not register with the Windows Action Center at all, only MB3 based MBEP product is preventing the patch from being automatic if it is registered to the Action Center.

"For now, users with MB3 based software installed and registered with Windows Action Center will not be able to receive any MS updates automatically, starting with the Jan. 2018 update. You can either apply the update manually or set the Malwarebytes action center setting to "Never register Malwarebytes in Windows Action Center" so that the MS update can apply automatically. Only Windows 10 and Server 2016 have patches." -

That is correct, Malwarebytes does not break Windows with the patch installed. The issue was the patch not being able to auto apply for folks with the MB3 based product. This side of the product, MBMC/MBAM, should not have that issue since it does not interact with the Action Center and is not recognized by Windows as an AV because of it.
