Infected, can't start Malwarebytes, etc

Recommended Posts

I'm experiencing a lot of symptoms on my Windows 7 Ultimate machine that lead me to believe the computer is infected. For one, I cannot start Malwarebytes, even after doing the removal tool and reinstalling. It did manage to scan once, then after I rebooted, it wouldn't start, saying "Unable to connect the service." I checked services, and Malwarebytes isn't even listed.

I ran the Sophos tool from a thumbdrive, and that found, among other things, a file called raczvht.exe, and renamed it. But that file is back in Windows processes.

I did the Farbar tool, logs attached. I'm also attaching the MB logs.

Please help! Thank you.

Hello JamminJames and welcome to Malwarebytes:

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into. "Do not open that file when running FRST fix"
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Open FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • On the Settings tab > Protection Scroll to and make sure the following are selected:
    Scan for Rootkits
    Scan within Archives

  • Scroll further to Potential Threat Protection make sure the following are set as follows:
Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP`s) set as :- Always detect PUP`s (recommended)
Potentially Unwanted Modifications (PUM`s) set as :- Alwaysdetect PUM`s (recommended)

  • Click on the Scan make sure Threat Scan is selected,
  • A Threat Scan will begin.
  • When the scan is complete if anything is found make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (that will automatically check all detected items), then click on the Quarantine Selected Tab
  • If asked to restart your computer to complete the removal, please do so
  • When complete click on Export Summary after deletion (bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard.
  • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more to retrieve the log.

To get the log from Malwarebytes do the following:

  • Click on the Reports tab > from main interface.
  • Double click on the Scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click Export > From export you have two options:
Copy to Clipboard - if seleted right click to your reply and select "Paste" log will be pasted to your reply
Text file (*.txt) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply

  • Use "Copy to Clipboard, then Right click to your reply > select "Paste" that will copy the log to your reply…

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes onto your Desktop.

Or from this Mirror

  • Right-click on AdwCleaner.exe and select user posted imageRun as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Accept the EULA (I accept), then click on Scan
  • Let the scan complete. Once it's done, make sure that every item listed in the different tabs is checked and click on the Clean button. This will kill all the active processes
  • Once the cleaning process is complete, AdwCleaner will ask to restart your computer, do it
  • After the restart, a log will open when logging in. Please copy/paste the content of that log in your next reply

Next,

Download Microsoft's " Malicious Software Removal Tool" and save direct to the desktop

Ensure to get the correct version for your system....

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/malicious-software-removal-tool-details.aspx

Right click on the Tool, select “Run as Administrator” the tool will expand to the options Window

Retrieve the MSRT log as follows, and post it in your next reply:

1) Select the Windows key and R key together to open the "Run" function
2) Type or Copy/Paste the following command to the "Run Line" and Press Enter:

notepad c:\windows\debug\mrt.log

The log will include log details for each time MSRT has run, we only need the most recent log by date and time....

Thank you,

Kevin

Yes, you`ll also notice that fix log from frst is empty, looks like the infection you have has exploited the fixlist.txt and cleared the entries... That action is what smartservice infection does.

I believe you have smartservice infection but it has changed slightly maybe to cause us confusion... You will need access to a spare PC and have a USB flash drive 4GB or above... Are those available to you..?

Because the infection has changed slightly i`m not sure what will happen with the first step... Lets give it a try and see what happens:

Plug USB Flash Drive into spare PC, navigate to that drive and Right click on it directly, select > Format. The quick option is adequate.

When the format completes download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

save it to a USB flash drive. Ensure to get the correct version for your system, 32 bit or 64 bit.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Do NOT plug the Flash drive into the sick PC until booted to the Recovery Environment

If you are using Vista or Windows 7 enter System Recovery Options as follows.

Enter System Recovery Options I give two methods, use whichever is convenient for you.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you may get the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type E:\frst64 or E:\frst depending on your version. Press Enter Note: Replace letter E with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

I`m offline very shortly will be off for maybe 7 to 8 hours.......

If that is successful make fresh install of Malwarebytes as follows:

Totally Remove Malwarebytes from your system:

Download the latest version of Malwarebytes cleanup tool from here: https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean and save to your Desktop..

If applicable, backup your Malwarebytes license key information and deactivate the product.

Close all open applications and deactivate Malwarebytes <---- Very important, do not miss that step

To deactivate Malwarebytes:

Right click on tray icon, from the opened list select "Quit Malwarebytes" an UAC alert will open, select "Yes" to deactivate Malwarebytes...

  • Double-click mb-clean.exe to run it
  • A prompt to confirm the cleanup will appear, select Yes or No
  • Yes - will proceed with the cleanup process <---- Select this option to start the tool
  • No - will exit the utility
  • The Utility will launch a Command Prompt window which will disappear once the the cleanup process completes.
  • Once completed, a log file ("mb-cleanresult.txt") will be on your desktop and you'll be prompted to reboot
  • We recommend an immediate reboot <--- Do Not miss out this step
  • Suppressing the reboot may result in an incomplete cleanup
  • Upon reboot Malwarebytes will be totally removed from your system

To re-install Malwarebytes:

Download Malwarebytes version 3 from the following link:

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thankyou/

  • Double click on the installer and follow the prompts. If necessary select the Blue Help tab for video instructions....
  • When the install completes and is updated do the following:
  • Open Malwarebytes, select > "settings" > "protection tab"
  • Scroll down to "Scan Options" ensure Scan for Rootkits and Scan within Archives are both on....
  • Go back to "DashBoard" select the Blue "Scan Now" tab......

When the scan completes deal with any found entries... Then select "Export Summary" then "Text File (*.txt)" name that log and save , you can copy or attach that to your reply...

By the way, I had been getting the "This copy of Windows not genuine" notice, and had foolishly tried some things to fix it. (I have since called Windows and they activated it for me, so that's not a problem any more.) One of the things I tried, which I believe is the culprit, was a "RemoveWAT" program that came zipped. Just in case this info helps.

Do not worry about windows activation, I take no notice of tools used to help make fixes, i`m here to get the infection off your system... It is also a strong possibility the infection may have removed access to recovery environment, if that is true you will need a Windows 7 installation or repair CD. If those are not available to you let me know...

I created the thumb drive. However, after booting and using F8, and clicking "Repair your computer," it does not show the options you listed. It says, "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." Then it gives some options, #1 being insert Windows installation disc and restart." However, I do not have an installation disc.

I can get to "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" ... should I use that?

Okay, tried again creating the USB, this time it worked, booting to the USB. However, when I clicked on the operating system to repair, I got an error message saying: "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair." As I said, I have Windows 7 Ultimate. Did you give me the wrong iso?

That one didn't work, but I found this: https://tb.rg-adguard.net/public.php

It's the whole Win 7 disc, which can be used for repair. It booted up okay, and I did the repair thing, and it said something like, 'restart, if the repair worked, the computer should boot okay, if not, it may go back to repair mode.' I restarted, and it went to a regular boot (I didn't press a key to boot to the thumb drive, so it just bypassed that).

I'm not sure if it's okay yet or not. What should I do? Run MBytes again?

With windows in normal mode do the following:

fixlist.txt

When I save fixlist.txt, it saves with 0 bytes. Then, when I open it with Notepad, it's blank. When I open it directly from the link with Notepad, instead of save it first, it has the content. If I save it from Notepad, and reopen it, it's blank. If I save it as something else (eg, fixlist-1.txt), it keeps its content. If I try to rename it, it says I don't have permission. If I open it and save it as fixlist.txt, it's blank again.

When I run FRST (with the file unopened), it produces a fixlog.txt with blank space under "fixlist content" again.

Is there any way to program FRST to use a file named something other than "fixlist.txt", because I think that might work, since those files retain their content.

What you describe in your last couple of replies would suggest the infection is still present on your system....

Run FRST one more time, ensure all boxes are checkmarked under "Whitelist" but only Addition.txt under "Optional scan" Select scan, when done post the new logs. "FRST.txt" and "Addition.txt"
