Ran Malware bytes and found nothing, but something is eating my internet

I keep getting over charges for internet usage. I have called the internet company and it is not a mistake on their end. I have logged onto the account to make sure no one else is connected to our internet (neighbors ect) and viewed all the devices using our service. We have eliminated devices so that we are certain it is the computer(desktop). I suspected malware/virus and ran the malwarebytes but it didn't find anything. I have Windows 7 pro and from here out I have no idea what to do. Just that something is using large amounts of data. I even unhook my computer at night or when I am not using it and even the 2-4 hours a day it is on is driving up my usage. I do not use trashy websites/porn, ect so there is nothing obvious causing this. I use amazon and ebay alot and facebook some. I have not had any performance issues, and my computer really is not even slow when starting up or when I am using it. Can there be a virus or some malware that isn't being dectected? Or secret spy programs running that I don't know about?! I don't know much about computers, but I can follow directions. Please can anyone help me?

So I looked at the task manager under resource monitor and in networking it shows that I have something actively running called regsvr32.exe. There is tons of them and they seem to be running alot. When I clicked the location it sent me to a folder called systemwow64. Does any of this sound like the source of my problem?

I don't understand why Malware bytes did not find these when I ran this scan?

Depends on what they are and how old.

Since you might be infected I will request your post be moved to the malware removal where an expert can assist you.

  • Root Admin

Hello @carmenJ

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes 3 then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes 3 installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the Export Summary button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find, and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know on your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Ron

I did all this through the admin account, if I am signed onto the other account it won't let me do any of it even though it prompts me for the admin password and I type it in, it just stops working, or restarts every time.

I apologize,  I could not get the attach to work so I ended up having to copy/paste.

Since quarantining the items found by the last scan, my internet usage has dropped dramatically. Whatever was using large amounts of it has stopped. I am just going to monitor it for now and see what happens. Hopefully this is over! (this time at least!) I don't know why the first scan I ran last week did not find these but at least it did this time, and I will have to start running it more often obviously!

Thank you to everyone who helped me with this! I appreciate it!

Carmen
