Realtime Web Protection Won't Start

Recommended Posts

I spent the last 6 hours or so removing a virus/malware on my PC that apparently came with some "cracked" software my son downloaded last night.  The executable that popped up most was called meltdown.exe and I'd say it was aptly named.  Windows 10 built-in protection detected it but did not remove it.  I then did my best removing it manually, followed by downloading and scanning with Malwarebytes 3 which did find a few leftovers.  Two of those leftovers were found and quarantined under HKLM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/SERVICES/UDISKMGR|IMAGEPATH

After quarantine, I selected REMOVE and then rebooted the machine when asked to do so.

The attached text fine is the exported report--note that removal failed.

Following reboot, I removed the registry key and value manually.  Subsequent rescan found no threat....HOWEVER...I cannot get the Real-Time Web protection to work now.  The Slider button slides to the right and turns green, text to the right of the switch says "Starting..." for about thirty seconds, but then it slides back to the off position.

Any suggestions?

Interesting, that I am having the same issue... without the virus ordeal...

I've scanned, restarted Mbytes, restarted Windblows 10, still when I toggle "Web Protection:" I get the 2 second flash of green and "Starting..." then returns to "Off". I use Mbytes as my primary AV, Windblows Defender is on, but made no difference when I disabled it, still couldn't toggle "Web Protection".

I did search the forum, but only found older posts, with older versions Mbytes suffering a similar ailment. Most stated there was an upcoming fix... my version is beyond those.

Not sure what else I can add to help:

Let us get a clean install of the current version. 3.3.1

We have another tool called MB-Clean which will automate the whole process for you.

Tool can be found at https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean

1. After downloading the tool run the tool.

2. The tool will automatically clean up the older possibly damaged installation and will ask you for a restart.

3. Restart your system and then the MB-Clean tool will prompt you to re-install the latest product .

4. Click on "Yes" to reinstall MB 3.×.

5. Now you will have the latest product installed. If it does not offer the new install after the reboot you can download and install from here.

https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mb3

Please let me know if you are still seeing issues after the latest product install.

I am downloading the mb-clean file now and will launch it momentarily.  Unfortunately, the rootkit virus(es) that I mentioned and said I was able to remove have proved to be quite annoying.  Even though MB says they're quarantined and will be deleted on the next reboot, they're back every time.  The resource manager is literally scrolling faster than I can read with various processes running amok (none of which were an issue before my son's download).

I'm assuming the malware is what is preventing me from being able to launch System Restore among other utilities and after maybe 5 minutes MAX of having a USB Stick inserted with WIndows 10 from which I was going to reinstall Windows altogether, by the time I booted from the jump drive it was corrupt and now returns a "No Operating System Found" error.

I'm hopeful the automated removal tool will work, but have also started backing up documents onto a portable HDD and am using the Microsoft Media Creation tool on an different machine to create new installation media that I will burn to DVD....I've been working on this literally almost 20 hours straight and my patience is wearing thin....especially when I keep telling myself there's probably some REALLY good deals on Christmas eve.....LOL

I overlooked the mention of the rootkit(I was not awake yet.
