Hard disk free space automatically being filled up

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm currently facing the problem of having all free space in my hard disk being filled up over time (sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, but all free space is eventually filled up, although certain actions can occasionally clear up ~60MB of space, which disappears again after a while) since about 3 days ago. I've had to move files to an external hard disk to free up space to download the programs to run the scans so I hope that won't be a problem. The MBAR scan returned an all clear with no infections, and so did the normal Malwarebytes scans. Restore point settings are at 0% and system cleanup did not solve the issue. Running Windows 8.1, with 8G RAM, 64-bit OS, and ~1TB hard disk (there was about 90GB free space before this issue occurred).

While I'm not sure if a virus/malware is causing this, part of the reason why I'm asking here is because I can't turn on the web protection in Malwarebytes. Every time I click to turn on, it goes back to off. (I'm currently on the premium trial, but I believe web protection should be able to remain on while I'm still on the trial.) I also Symantec installed and have been informed 'Proactive Threat Protection' is malfunctioning, but I don't see anyway to get it working via the program as well.

Would greatly appreciate your assistance whether or not it turns out to be a malware issue. Thank you.

Without even looking much further, this program here can be a problem. µTorrent

Though there are "some" legal uses for µTorrent - the vast majority are illegal in all industrialized nations.
It is very easy to get infected by a rogue download.
Space is often in flux when using µTorrent

You have old compromised Java on the computer. I would highly recommend you uninstall ALL versions of Java. If you have to have Java make sure you keep it up to date at all times and uninstall all older versions. https://java.com

You have this installed on the computer. Not sure what it is or what it does but I assume it has something to do with Anime. Nothing wrong with it as long as you're aware.

You also have Soluto installed on this computer. If you were not aware of it.

What is Soluto?

Soluto is a cloud-based PC management service that allows users to remotely view technical details of a computer and take pre-approved remote actions on their and on others’ computers, with the goal of improving computer performance. Soluto can be accessed via the web, a downloaded agent, and a Windows 8 Metro app. Users can manage up to 5 computers for free. Slots for additional computers can be purchased on a per month per computer basis. Soluto uses a downloaded agent to transmit data to, and receive data from, Soluto’s back-end servers. Data transmitted to Soluto includes the apps running during boot up, enabled browser toolbars and add-ons, hardware specs, and a specialized form of crash reports. The servers send back to the agent information such as solutions for recent crashes and the remote actions that were initiated by the user and need to occur.

Your version of Malwarebytes 3 is also out of date. I would recommend you install this beta update and reboot.

Over all the computer does not appear to be infected. It may be your Windows WINSX folders that are using this space along with Windows Updates.

You can download this tool TreeSize free and it will scan your system to see where your space is being used the most

I'm not saying this is your issue, but it may be.
