definitions not updating

Recommended Posts

Are you receiving some sort of error message? When you click on Database: Current, if it changes to Checking and comes back to Current then you are up-to-date and there's no issue.

Definitions only change when a new infection or variant is discovered. Since that doesn't happen very often with a Mac it's normal to go for several days without an update. I checked and see that mine are also dated Nov 30, so I'd have to say we're good to go.

Thank you for helping.  I appreciate it.

There is no error message.  I open malwarebytes on my Mac and it shows an error that the database is outdated.  There is also the icon showing that the database is outdated.  I click on the button to update database and the icon quickly flashes to the green check mark for a moment before returning to its previous state (database outdated).  Choosing the Malwarebytes -> Check for updates option on the menu bar does not show activity.  It is as if the program cannot connect to the server.

I have tried uninstalling the program using the appropriate uninstall tool for my version.  The new download installs properly and has the updated database at that time, but cannot update afterwards.

Most likely, you have something blocking the network connection that Malwarebytes for Mac needs to make to check for and download database updates. This would probably be something like Little Snitch or Lulu, but also could be a restriction on your corporate network if this is for a Mac at a business.

See the following page from the Malwarebytes for Mac user guide, which outlines the server addresses and ports that the software needs to communicate with.

There is another cause -- as I have here. The application does not use the trusted keys stored in the system for SSL encryption/certificates. This means that the FireEye server I go through, which decrypts and reencrypts all Internet communications, causes Malwarebytes to fail to download updates.

You should update the application to use trusted certificates in the system Keychain.
