This laptop has been slower for a day or so and today when Windows Updates was taking a very long time to download and install, I noticed Malware Tray Application is continuous running according to Task Manager...this has not been the case in the past.  I noticed that this was an issue in September but supposed to have been fixed.

I had to stop installation of the Windows Updates as it was taking way too long.

How can I stop the Tray Application from continuously running in Task Manager?

Thank you.

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  4. Press the "Scan" button
  5. This will product two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  6. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  7. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  8. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  9. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  10. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

It is supposed to be running when MB is on.

"installer_version" : "3.2.2",

Let us get a clean install of the current version. 3.3.1

We have another tool called MB-Clean which will automate the whole process for you.

Tool can be found at https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean

1. After downloading the tool run the tool.

2. The tool will automatically clean up the older possibly damaged installation and will ask you for a restart.

3. Restart your system and then the MB-Clean tool will prompt you to re-install the latest product .

4. Click on "Yes" to reinstall MB 3.×.

5. Now you will have the latest product installed. If it does not offer the new install after the reboot you can download and install from here.

Please let me know if you are still seeing issues after the latest product install.

The Malwarebytes Tray Application is still continuously running.

Also, the daily scan results from last night showed that rootkit detection is disabled when in fact it is enabled.

@louanna27

We are still looking into the tray application issue.

As far as the scan with rootkits being turned off--Could you go to Settings > Protection > Scan Options > Ensure "Scan for rootkits" is checked there. Double-check the scheduled scans as well.

If the issue with rootkit scans being off continues to happen, get us full logs and re-upload so we can see recent events. My signature has a link on getting logs. Make sure to get FRST and MB-Check logs.

Thank you

The Malwarebytes Tray Application is still continuously running for me also, also using Windows 7. Log attached.

Does the Rootkit Scan option need to be turned on all the time, as after the programme update to 3.3.1 it was turned off I presume by default.

Anyway turned it on for full a threat scan and unlike the louanna27 scan results, my scan showed that rootkit detection is enabled when in fact it was enabled.

It is optional and as you presumed it is off by default.

Are you having any other issues?

I'm no technie of any kind so not sure what to tell you, but I do know that scanning for rootkits will not stay at "Enabled" setting; it goes back to disabled.

I've attached another mb-check if you want to look at it.

Also, even though I use Chrome and occasionally IE11,  I uninstalled Firefox some time ago as it just wouldn't work well, but I notice there are Firefox extensions and plugins listed on FRST.txt and Addition.txt.   Can you advise how to delete these Firefox files?

Thank you.

Thanks Porthos, nothing I can put my finger on, although Malwarebytes when it is updating databases does tend to hog the machine, as the laptop becomes quite sluggish until it's finished updating, considering I'm running an i7 core I would expect the machine to be a little more responsive regardless. I have an identical i7 laptop and a main desktop PC and all three running Windows 7 have the same sluggish behaviour. Other than that Malwarebytes 3 runs quite nicely.
