Can't get rid of message, "...currently running with add-ons disabled"

I am new here, so I apologize if I'm in the wrong place.

Right off the bat, I'll tell you that I am not computer literate.

My internet explorer 8's information bar has a message that tells me I'm running it without add-ons enabled. I have done everything I can possibly imagine without throwing my computer in the trash to enable whatever it wants me to enable, but nothing I've done works.

I have gone through the list of everything that is in the "manage add-ons" list and disabled everything, restarted the computer, re-enabled everything & restarted the computer, as per the instructions in the "Help" section.

No change.

Ran PC Doctor Tests for all systems.

All passed

I went to the Internet explorer support site and tried some of their suggested methods for trouble with internet explorer 8.

Included with that were, resetting all i.e. settings & restarting computer.

When I restarted computer, I got this message...

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: ...ch\DesktopMessenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information.

I have checked just about every setting that I can understand, and left ones I know nothing about alone.

I can tell you this much that I find suspicious. In the "manage add-ons", there is a little section titled, "Not available".

In that section is the following...

{CD67F990-D8E9-11D2...

Diagnose Connection Problem...

Windows Messenger

My Web Search Quick View

Discuss

All of the above says not available.

One more piece of information... last week Avast caught some infected files and I have them in the chest right now.

Any clues anybody?

Redstrip,

One or more of the add-ons you have installed is not yet compatible with Internet Explorer 8.

Could you list the add-ons you have installed?

Alternatively, an alternate browser such as Firefox or Opera should be compatible with whatever add-ons are problematic.

Let me know how it goes.

I suspect it's the PayPal plugin causing the issues, as it's the oldest one, and therefore the most likely to be incompatible. I did some searching and came across this thread that appears to be somewhat related. Someone was having issues with that plugin while using IE8 beta, so it's likely that Microsoft put an incompatibility block on the plugin, or at least older versions of it that cause the problem reported to them and that's why it gives you that message because it's automatically disabling the plugin when you open your browser.

I'd uninstall all the ebay and PayPal stuff, then check to see if the problem persists. If it does not, then I'd check to see if there are newer, compatible versions available if you still wish to use the features they offer.

This is what I see when I open internet explorer...

Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons

All Internet Explorer add-ons, such as ActiveX controls or toolbars, are turned off. Some webpages might not display correctly.

To continue to your home page, click the Home button.

To browse using add-ons, close Internet Explorer and then start it again.

Check for the latest Windows updates.

How do browser add-ons affect my browsing experience?

All of the above is what it says. I uninstalled the ebay and paypal plug-ins, and it appears to me that some different add-ons are showing now. I know nothing about this kind of stuff. Thanks for your help! This is what I see now, when I open Manage add-ons...

  • Root Admin

Well if it is Java then here is a canned message to FULLY remove old versions on XP.

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

Restart the computer and then install the latest version.

Download and Update Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) - JRE 6 Update 16 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

  • 3 weeks later...

Okay. I removed the old Java from my computer and installed the updated

JRE 6, 16. as per some suggestions. Still no change in the information bar. In the meantime, I opened up the properties section of internet explorer. I clicked on reset internet explorer's settings and restarted computer. The information bar was still telling me that internet explorer was running with add-ons disabled.

While still in properties, I clicked on the shortcut tab. Next to "target", there is a space that say's this, "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

I got rid of the -extoff by using my backspace button. I restarted my computer AND IT'S GONE!

I am suspecting I probably turned off my information bar, I really don't know because I know nothing about any of this kind of computer stuff, but at least now when I click on internet explorer, I get my homepage instead of that awful message.

Thank you to all who have offered helpful information to me.

I look forward to hearing any comments about the fix I found. I might have just put a bandaid on it.
