Can't Open Malwarebytes

Recommended Posts

Several weeks ago, I  tried to open Malwarebytes, and I could not get it to open.  The icon on the taskbar showed it is active.  So, after a scan the other day, it showed that there were some issues, and that I should check them, and decide what to do.  I don't know how long I have been unable to open Malwarebytes, no matter what I do, I cannot open the dashboard.  I can't get it to open by clicking the icon on the taskbar, or by going through programs, and clicking to open there.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  After reinstall, the same thing,.  I can't open it.  It has a red dot and says that I need to run a scan, but if I cannot open the program, I sure can't run anything,

I am running windows 10 64 bit, HP workstation, with plenty of available ram, and hard drive space.  I have tried shutting down all the programs that I had open, nothing works.

Please help

Please help

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  4. Press the "Scan" button
  5. This will product two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  6. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  7. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  8. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  9. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  10. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

I tried that before I requested help, or immediately afterwards.  Every time I click on "Download FRST", it shuts my browser totally down.  Firefox.  I have never had anything else do that, I mean the very second I click on it.  So, I have been unable to download FRST

Also, what version of Malwarebytes are you currently running, if you know (see attached image). If it's not version 3.3.x, please try updating for me.

Hello @ vbarytskyy

Thanks for responding.  I had uninstalled and then installed the 3.3.1.. version yesterday.  I was thinking uninstalling and reinstalling might fix my problem.  So when I reinstalled, I reinstalled from malwarebytes website, then saw a link on the forum for the latest version, and installed that one.

Yes, I will try using Edge or Internet explorer and see if the file will download.

Thanks!

I have tried and tried to download FRST.  I took the advice given to start safemode with networking, and turn on rootkit scan.  I did that.  I then did the scan, as advised.  There were 13 that were found and I quarantined them.  I then restarted and the MB icon was no longer showing in the taskbar.  Prior to that it had shown with a red "x" on it  I tried to start MB, and of course nothing.  So I went to bleepingcomputers to download the FRST, and tried with Firefox, and remembered to try with MS, so tried that.  Now, it shows that it will download, but it will be 12 hours, and the download still has not started after an hour.

I appreciate all the help I can get.  I write legal briefs 20 hours a day, and it took me a while to get the time to do what had been suggested.  It was not because it was fixed, or because I didn't want to do it.  When attorneys are breathing down your back wanting their briefs, you get their briefs, especially for US Supreme Court.

So please don't think my silence had been being a snob, or just don't care.  I do appreciate all the assistance.  Please continue and I will continue taking your suggestions.

Thanks!

The computer hung up for unknown reason so I restarted it.

This time when it started up, after logging into the computer, it went directly to malwarebytes program on computer for me to set all of the options.  It successfully scanned, and the icon remains in the taskbar, and I can open it now.

Don't know what happened, and i never did get FRST to download.

I just wanted to let yall know.  Hopefully won't have any more issues, but won't hold my breath.

Thanks!
